My favorite thing about tethering is

nothing

nothing is my favorite thing about tethering

Please, cellular Macs already!

(Today's anti-favorite: if the phone loses reception for even a moment — common on trains! — it disconnects tethering and never reconnects. You're just offline until you notice. Then you need to reconnect from the Mac's Wi-Fi menu again, after waiting for the option to become available, a process that's almost as slow as dialing up your ISP with a modem in the 1900s.)

Slack is crucial for scaling and for organizational health in general.

People with slack have headspace and time to improve things, to think ahead, to sweep out the corners, to prepare for what's coming next. And they will see these needs before management does.

"Running lean" eliminates slack. This only works for a while, and only if you have a flat org of highly self-actualized people who you give autonomy. And you'll still burn people out eventually.

If you're a student or faculty, there's a 40% discount for #Obsidian Sync — $29 per year instead of $48.

This isn't new but I am realizing that many students don't know about it. You can apply for it in your account settings.

Copying a song off the radio onto a tape doesn’t cost the music industry anything. Copying songs at perfect clarity, ten million times, does.

Taking a photo in a public space isn’t a major privacy concern. Storing continuous video of all public spaces, is.

A person reading everything you’ve written, gives them a sense of who you are. AI reading everything ever written by anyone, isn’t the same thing.

Many things are acceptable at single-human scale, but not at tech-scale.

You're walking in the desert. There's no one around and your shield is dead
Out of the corner of your eye you spot him: Shai-Hulud

He's following you, about 30 miles back. He crests over a dune and breaks into a sprint
He's gaining on you: Shai-Hulud

You’re looking for your camp but you're all turned around. He's almost upon you now
and you can see there's teeth in his face. My God, there's teeth everywhere!

Just for fun. I added together all of the images I took of Comet Pons Brooks a few weeks ago. The session was just after astronomical twilight and every single frame I took (68) had at least one satellite trail. To really piss me off, a whole train of freshly launched Starlink satellites joined the "party". This, friends, is the price we pay for "progress". #notostarlink #savethesky

The problem with udm14* is that Google Calculator is legitimately one of my favorite pieces of software (the natural language unit conversion is so good), and I expect udm14 is going to kill Google Calculator because that's the point

Maybe I should just make my own js calculator with builtin unit conversion.

The point of solar panels is not to ensure "solar profitability," but to make for a greener, better world. Its profitability is only justified insofar as it moves us towards that goal. If we want to switch to renewables, then sometimes we're going to have surplus, because of how renewables work. This is well known and discussed ad nauseam. If that makes power markets unstable, then the problem is with markets, not with there being too many solar panels.

This Vienna street isn’t “closed” because cars have been removed. It has successfully been “opened” to everything else, to a diverse and invigorated civic life, because cars have been replaced by a multitude of wonderful things.

Language matters.
