♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

It's worth keeping in mind that in ARPANET days (the direct ancestor of the Internet), we were largely ignored by AT&T et al. because they had their own plans for public networking that would follow the telephone model -- pay per minute of connect time and per kilopacket sent or received, etc.

That the ARPANET model would succeed was not at all guaranteed, and in fact seemed extraordinarily unlikely at times. Just a minor change here or there in the timeline and most of what we take for granted now on the Net would not exist in any kind of recognizable form.

The rise of advertiser-supported services is largely what made most of the modern Internet possible, and those persons and organizations who routinely block or rant against advertising have yet to offer an alternative funding model to keep this stuff going that wouldn't make the current digital divide look like a pimple compared with their Mt. Everest of user charges that would be necessary if the advertising model collapses.

    Any #Linux users using #brew to manage (at least a few of their) packages? Developing on Mac myself and it feels really convenient being able to target both Mac OS and Linux using a single tool, but I have honestly no idea if anyone on Linux is using brew. Are they?

    If not, what would be the best way to distribute CLI tools for Linux? My apps are mostly written in Go, so basically just a binary without dependencies.

    Research shows that code comments rarely stay in sync with the code they’re describing. Other psychology research shows that incorrect comments are worse than no comments at all. Should we get rid of code comments entirely or are some worth keeping around?

    I’m happy to change names of methods, attributes, even classes, when the names don’t help me understand what it’s for. But I try to keep that within the scope of what I’m doing. Turning a bug fix into a big modification usually turns out badly for me.

    I’m feeling triggered today.

    My progeny was notified by their boss “that it’s not a good fit” as a way of firing them over text.

    Now I’m remembering the times it didn’t work out for me after NOT getting feedback for improvements needed to keep my job.

    Nobody should ever be confused to why they are fired. Ever.
