I care about doing research right, disability rights, 2E kids, SFF, music & much more. Biostatistician doing pediatric HIV clinical trials, previously psychiatry research. Life's too short to specialize. Never stopped masking.

An MIT student asked AI to make her headshot more ‘professional.’ It gave her lighter skin and blue eyes.
“I was like, ‘Wow, does this thing think I should become white to become more professional?’” said Wang, who is Asian American.

@Wolven have you seen this?

It's easy to fault the founders for all the things they got wrong. Once in a while, we should note when they got something right.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ohio-woman-miscarried-home-will-not-criminally-charged-grand-jury-says-rcna132093#

A grand jury refused to charge the Ohio woman who miscarried in her bathroom.

Grand juries were added to the Fifth Amendment to check a potentially tyrannical government. (Not all states are required to use Grand Juries because Grand Juries were not incorporated through the due process clause but the idea comes from the 5th Amendment)

@Teri_Kanefield @mattblaze Especially horrifying how the hospital acted. Women will die because they're scared to go to the hospital in emergencies like this one.

Dear people who don't understand chronic illness/invisible disabilities -

  • believe me when I say I'm too exhausted to absorb what you are saying or discuss something complex
  • believe me when I say I'm too tired to put away groceries or walk to something a block away
  • understand that things that take you trivial amounts of energy can be exhausting for me
  • BELIEVE ME

Journalist Ed Yong announced he's left The Atlantic. As many of you know, his work on the effects of long Covid, CFS/ME, and related chronic illnesses has been excellent and empathetic. He says that the best way to keep track of what he's up to is my newsletter, The Ed’s Up: buttondown.email/edyong209

Articles like this focus on kids but these shortages also impact adults. ADHD doesn't magically disappear when we grow up. Losing access to meds affects our ability to work, to drive safely, to manage our families - all things that require executive function. Not to mention wasting time trying to fill prescriptions!

An emotionally compelling duet from "Weird Al" Yankovic and Kate Winslet on a subject near and dear to my heart. "I Need a Nap" is everything you'd expect from a Sandra Boynton song.

On the 5th anniversary of the catastrophe, in depth article from @HorizonMass
"On Sept. 13, 2018, routine maintenance turned into mayhem after a gas line became over-pressurized in Lawrence. The resulting 10-alarm event involved at least three explosions and set off simultaneous blazes in that city and adjoining Andover and North Andover, and led to tens of thousands of evacuations, widespread utility outages, 25 hospitalizations, and one fatality."

My junior high school years were a major inflection point for music. Sweet Baby James. Carole King's Tapestry, which touched our hearts so deeply. All of us remember how we felt when we first heard them. But then came Joni Mitchell's Blue. I remember being stunned by the twists and turns of the melody, the darkness of the piano, unlike anything I'd heard before. More than 50 years later, it still hits me every time I hear it.
