🖖Calling all Star Trek fans … new Trek in Time video episode is out: https://youtu.be/y76Z12XyOeY Audio: https://share.transistor.fm/s/ae8b3e71 Sean and I sing our way through watching this episode of Star Trek Strange New Worlds. Does musical theater have a place in Star Trek? (hint: no)
@TechConnectify Microwaves shouldn't have clocks. Every time there's a power cut, I have to sync the oven clock with the microwave clock... it makes me twitch when they are out of sync.
OK, time for a short* thread** about gas stoves. At this point, I have been thoroughly disillusioned and don't know how I ever thought they were any good. I never want one again***
I hope
** Please read the whole thing (I'll mark the end) before replying, as I might be touching on your thought!
*** Wok-users and enjoyers, boy do I have some interesting news for you about plug-in induction woks and how they're getting fairly cheap

Whatever you might want to say about the E.U., it looks like they've legitimately negotiated a better deal for devs. That’s what a working political system looks like 😄
Boeing’s #1 problem is not that they lack a culture of accountability.
It’s that they hate unions and hate criticism. So many of Boeing's major actions in the last 20, even 30 years have had to do with their attempts to break unions and escape political pressure in Washington State. The payoff is pressing workers without enough training, denigrating and overruling the work of union employees, and outsourcing work to avoid increasing union employment. This has cost them $10s of billions.
✨ It’s true. I’ve been working on this blog post for ten years.
You see, I’ve been slowly buying up nearly seventy super rare issues of a 80s/90s gadget catalog that meant the world to me growing up. And in the process, I’ve uncovered the secret history of this lost copywriting art.
PLUS, as a bonus, I’ve scanned every single issue — so you can read them all.
@cabel For about 10 years from the mid 80s I picked up every new Argos Catalogue (UK high street store) and put them in a box in my parent's loft thinking how much fun it would be to revisit the tech / toy sections in 30 to 40 years time. I also packed away some Tandy/Radioshack catalogs too. I recently visited my parents and decided it was time to revisit the old catalogs. They weren't there. "Oh, those old things?" my Mum said... "we threw them out years ago."
HEY! What are some of your favorite gadgets you got this year? And I'm not talking about an iPhone 15 Pro or whatever... tell me the quirky stuff! Neat products you love and don't think many people know about. :D
EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton urged Elon Musk to crack down on the spread of misinformation on the X platform following the Hamas attack on Israel to comply with new EU rules.
The online content rules, known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), require X and other major platforms to remove illegal content and take steps to address risks to public safety and civil discourse.
The EU can fine X up to 6% of the company's global turnover for non-compliance with the DSA #AureFreePress
I’m gonna launch a few items of merch next year. They’re very cool and will appeal to a much wider reach than the “Snazzy Labs YouTube audience” so I want to sell them under a separate brand. But what on earth do I name the site/company/etc.? Names are hard…
Would you like a short thread on a weird internal conflict I have regarding a fairly widespread issue Hyundai/Kia E-GMP cars are having?
That question was rhetorical. Strap in.
OK, so my car can (in theory) charge at 48 amps. With our Freedom voltage, that's 11.5 kW. A fair number of owners are having problems charging at this speed because the charge inlet overheats.
Now, initially, Hyundai had a very stupid strategy for this occurrence: stop charging entirely. That was awful.
Your favorite iPhone Mastodon client (wish I could list more than 4 options in a poll, feel free to reply if your favorite isn't listed, e.g. the official Mastodon client):
I've been thinking about these "dns propagation checkers" like https://www.whatsmydns.net/ that show you a world map.
This feels weird to me, because the main reason that DNS lookups get outdated records is that the resolver has an old record cached. And whether or not a record is cached has nothing to do with the geographical location of the server?
what's going on with these sites? why are they designed this way?
(would love to hear from people who actually know the answer, not guesses)
@b0rk I work with a collection of large e-commerce sites that uses two data centres (on prem) for hosting duties. We use a global load balancer (which uses DNS) to direct traffic to one data center or the other. When we flip a site (say from primary to secondary), we use the DNS checker to see how the DNS change is propagating (e.g. for maintenance - we can see when it's ok to start work).
@b0rk Yes, we also check that as well. The managers love seeing the DNS propagation and will only give the go-ahead for maintenance work to proceed once the DNS has propagated as expected, the traffic has dropped off / moved across as well as several other items on the checklist.
We once had an issue where the traffic did not come back after maintenance and the DNS checker showed that it was due to DNS, revealing an issue with the global load balancer. Just another tool in the arsenal.
@Free_Press Just an FYI GB news wants to be the UK version of Fox news and spreads right wing conspiracy theories and anti vaccine nonesense. An abhorrent organisation.
@arstechnica Along with the greatest computer of all time (Commodore #Amiga), the old Palm Pilot is one of the few pieces of tech I truly fell in love with.
