This is horrific - the new spousal visa limit applies to renewals as well. The current household income limit is £18,700 and it's being increased to a ridiculous £38,700. I can't fathom what damage this will cause to families and businesses

Orcas have sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same.

Scientists think a traumatized orca initiated the assault on boats after a "critical moment of agony" and that the behavior is spreading among the population through social learning.

Mastodon how to:

  1. Follow people. Follow follow follow. Your feed doesn't get busy until you are following about 200 people. When you see a post you like, follow whoever posted it. Do this for all posts - you can always unfollow later

  2. Hashtags. put hashtag your posts and look for hashtags you are interested in, then repeat 1 - follow people who post on those hashtags. Also put hashtags in your profile. Remember to use & capitalise each word, helps people who use screenreaders

Another reminder that as far as I can tell, the wonderful @Buglife are the only UK conservation charity with an active presence on mastodon, and they're great! Give them a follow

update: @bumblebeeconservationtrust are here too! and also very worthy of a follow!

Brilliant news - Sandeel fisheries closed in the English North Sea.

Sandeels are the primary food source for most of our seabirds, who are struggling massively. This is a huge win!

If you're here from twitter, some tips from me:

Post post post. Stick some hashtags at the end. At first I thought it was really quiet, but I quickly got back to posting for the enjoyment of writing rather than to just do numbers. Then people found me through hashtags.

Follow follow follow. Try to follow at least 100 people. Follow anyone who writes what you find interesting. Not only will you have more to read, you'll make new friends! Hooray!

A bearded vulture that flew through the UK 4 years ago - the second ever record for the UK - has been identified by DNA from her feathers as Flysch-Vigo, who hatched in 2019 in the French Alps, and was seen in the Swiss Alps in 2023, again identified by her feathers

I love how we can track birds now, through gps loggers or by testing the dna on feathers they leave behind. Remembering the Pfeilstorch - how we first found evidence of bird migration: an unfortunate White Stork arrived one Spring in Germany with an African spear through its neck
