Hi, I have studied to a minimum of a degree level, conservation biology (BSc degree) & psychology (Post Grad certificate)

Conservation biology is the study of the conservation of nature and of Earth's biodiversity with the aim of protecting species, their habitats, and ecosystems from excessive rates of extinction and the erosion of biotic interactions (wiki)

Psychology is the study of mind and behavior of human and nonhuman organisms

More people thinking about how to reduce emissions can only have a positive effect. In all contexts (e.g., individuals, organisations), what needs to happen is that society makes plans, & follows through on them, to provide lower CO2 activities. We generally know what those lower CO2 activities are. For example, is the highest CO2-emitting activity sector, therefore, replacing private vehicles with EV public transport will decrease CO2 emissions

Capitalism allows the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, i.e. Capitalists', who own the means of production and generate their wealth by extracting surplus value from the labor of workers, i.e. exploitation. The profit margin is achieved through paying workers less than the value of what they produce. This results in an inherent exploitation of labor and contributes to the accumulation of wealth among capitalists, which leads to poverty and destitution among the workers.

scientist,

@Radical_EgoCom @JeniParsons

Whilst "capitalist" has a broad social context, it's certainly the case that the height of capitalism such a global corporations, also negatively affect small capitalist business owners

E.g., even before the invasion of , the fuel industries were increasing the price of their products (increasing profits)

An increase in fuel prices causes a knock on effect. E.g., Food prices go up. Small businesses can't simply pass on extra costs to their customers

scientist,

@Radical_EgoCom @JeniParsons

Customers that are also being 'squeezed' by the fuel industries imposed "cost of living crisis". Imposed, because they're making record profits.

Generally, the global model isn't sustainable if profit equals more

Having said that, 'squeezing' middle to high incomes, may simply mean these demographic groups have slightly less spare cash after they've been on their annual jet set holiday, bought their EV SUV, spent cash on fireworks, etc.

Increasing atmospheric CO2 by burning vast amounts of carbon is the

So, it always strikes me as a crazy idea to promote using CO2 emitting Jet planes, to spray aerosols into the atmosphere, as a desperate attempt to mitigate

Shouldn't we try not flying on Jets first?

If a person thinks that not flying on Jets is more of a crazy idea than using Jets to spray aerosols, considering the effects of burning carbon, whose plan is more rationale?

scientist,

@Hypx

People that say & actually believe that fossil fuels are mandatory:

  1. Lack vision beyond business as usual. I.e., it didn't have to be this way. "This way" is decades of suboptimal decision making

  2. Don't understand & or don't care about, the harm that burning fossil fuels is causing (often both)

  3. Are typically either the greenwashed & or are fossil fuel lobbyists (e.g., forms of cognitive bias due to personal lifestyles)

  4. Troll people that speak out against burning fuels

scientist,

@Hypx

Evidently, the people that want to burn fuels are actually the bad guys in reality (it's immoral, considering the effects of burning fuels)

Don't you understand?

scientist,

@Hypx

More than that, I'm inferring that the data on emissions (increasing year on year) and what the science of implies, means that any person who supports the burning of is, at the very least, expressing that they have no clue about what they're talking about (or a sociopath)

Of course, context is everything. Some people feel like they have no choice but to use a fossil fueled vehicle for work, for example.

scientist,

@Hypx

Since it's about reducing emissions, are you saying it's not possible, or 'magical thinking, to think that people could choose to not fly on jets to holiday abroad?

Or do you mean that it's ideological of me to believe that these people would give a shit about climate change? (of course, most of them would never say that out loud. Or perhaps even to themselves)

Maybe it is, BUT, that's the only way we are going to reduce their CO2 emissions (to somehow change their activities)

That's a friggin insane plan! & here is why:

"New reactors will inevitably mean more radioactive waste. Nuclear waste decommissioning, as of 2019, was already estimated to cost UK taxpayers £3 billion per year"

That's £3 billion per year, a rising cost, only to "manage" the accumulating Nuclear waste. Nuclear waste will remain harmful for HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of years

Some people & people in industry & governments are promoting nuclear fission as a solution to rising atmospheric levels.

However, they always, and I mean always, forget to mention that fission has already caused a severe nuclear waste problem. A problem that's not going away any time in the foreseeable future.

, 97, among dozens arrested in protest

26 November 2023

Sydney, Australia, Nov 26 (EFE).- "Dozens of protesters, including a 97-year-old man, were arrested on Sunday during a protest off Australia’s east coast that disrupted operations at the country’s biggest coal export port.

" group had organized the protest to block the traffic of coal cargo ships in the port of Newcastle since Saturday.

"The group said on its Twitter account that at least 59 people have been arrested so far.

"Since Saturday, groups of 50 to 60 protesters have been taking turns in rostered two-hour shifts getting on canoes and inflatable boats and preventing ships from leaving the port.

"Among the protesters who went out to sea was Alan Stuart, a 97-year-old religious pastor.

"Stuart said he was doing it for his grandchildren and future generations after being pulled out of his boat by the police.

"'I am doing this for my grandchildren and future generations because I don’t want to leave them a world full of increasingly severe and frequent ,' he said. 'I am so sorry that they will have to suffer the consequences of our inaction. So, I think it is my duty to do what I can and to stand up for what I know is right.'

"Rising Tide claims that the protest prevented more than half a million tonnes of coal from leaving the Newcastle port by the time the demonstration ended.

"Protesters demand that the Australian government stop all new projects that involve the use of fossil energy and confront the more decisively.

"The climate crisis is one of the big issues of political debate in Australia, a country exposed to the effects of and .

"Australia is the world’s second largest exporter of thermal coal and the largest exporter of cooking coal."

"motives of those who have them arrested"

Those who arrested them are doing what they're ordered to do ("following orders", "doing their Job" is following orders)

Someone[s] up the pecking order gave those orders. Follow that to the 'top' and ask those people what are their motives (I'd wager it's money). Having written that, "following orders" is often also because if they don't, they lose their Jobs (AKA as lose )

To try & educate, without hurting Joe's pride, "Joe Blogs", that burning fuel causes a myriad of diseases. Also, that we must stop burning carbon based fuels if we are to mitigate

If a "Joe" knows that burning fuels harms "himself" (pronoun), the people Joe says he " cares" about & is a threat to life on Earth, but "Joe" continues to want to do activities that burn fuels, then Joe is a sociopath (of sorts)
