For years we've been using an alternate protocol between our own sites because ActivityPub wasn't capable of providing the services we require for federated communications. This is how we've supported things like nomadic identity long before the concept was even viable in ActivityPub. Now that I've got a usable framework for nomadic identity over ActivityPub, I went back and had a closer look at what else I might need to add to ActivityPub in order to finally put the Nomad protocol out to pasture.

I've mentioned transport encryption in the past; but that's only a big deal if you don't trust HTTPS security or your government. For true nomadic identity, we would also be sending sync packets so that your alternate identities are kept up to date with everything you do on other instances which share that identity. We'll also be offering a partially shared identity as mentioned in previous posts. This won't be a true clone but will instead be a way to link your various fediverse profiles in a cohesive way - like we do with our Fediverse Identity Manager. These are all pretty easy - just a 'Simple Matter Of Programming®'.

But I overlooked a real biggie. Permissions, permissions, permissions. A concept completely lacking in ActivityPub; and which can't be discussed rationally with other fediverse developers because folks raised on Twitter don't even understand the concept.

I'm remedying that situation right now.

@slumberingcat@easymode.im avatar

@travisfw @mikedev Presumably the implementation of permissions differs from the public facing representation. As long as the backend functionality exists then it's up to frontend devs to design a usable interface.

Not sure if you noticed but half the is memes. They're not my thing but I enjoyed putting together the best meme consumption experience I could.

Check it out in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXVhb4sVZV4 or go to https://piefed.social/topic/chilling/memes?layout=masonry_wide&sort=hot to use it yourself. Click/tap on any image for a full screen lightbox-style image gallery that you can move through by swiping or using the arrow keys.

Can you think of any improvements?

@rimu Also the masonry view reminds me of this recent blog post from home assistant. It might give you ideas, or not.

Does anyone know of a list of what features are coming in 4.3.0 (I see several instances are already running alpha versions)? I've poked around a little and found stuff about UI/UX changes and some back end changes, but I was hoping to find a complete, easy to read list, especially for user facing features.

slumberingcat,
@slumberingcat@easymode.im avatar

@Tim_Eagon @padraig did a good write up you can read here on the UI/UX side of things.

Anybody know who coined the term "Fediverse" and when that was?

The Wikipedia page was created in 2017. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fediverse&oldid=783488155

@slumberingcat@easymode.im avatar

@J12t According to this the earliest mention on Twitter was 2012 and W3C first mentioned is in 2013.

Question for open source devs:

I'm currently doing research into simplifying & standardising spinning up developer instances/environments for open source projects. I don't intend to lock devs into a specific way of doing things but providing options.

The current tools I'm interested in are Development Containers & DevPod, DevBox & EditorConfig.

I'm doing this as part of GuildAlpha and it's still early days. So the questions for fellow devs:

  • Your opinion in general
  • What projects have you found easiest to set up?
  • What pain points have you experienced when trying to contribute to a project and how would you prefer they were solved?
  • Opinions on the tools I've mentioned especially if you've used them before
  • Other tools that may suit this usecase
  • What would be a deal breaker for you?

The Open Source Afro Hair Library partners with Dove to bring us this amazing "guide to the creation and celebration of Black hair textures and protective styles in video games" called Code My Crown. Github Repo for good measure.

It contains reference pictures of different hair styles, example models and step-by-step guides on creating them with 3D modelling and texturing tools such as Blender, ZBrush and Substance Painter.

Highly recommend a read, a genuinely impressive document. Even if you're not making a game in 3D you could easily apply this to 2D and character portraits.

Do table top people know about Dungeondraft?

It's built on top of Godot and allows you to create maps. It looks pretty cool for $20.

I've seen a lot of people recently stating that Godot can't do console ports. While that is true now, there have been some developments in this area that people should know about.

W4Games, found by Godot's current technical leaders, is pllaning to "offer Godot console ports as an affordable and transparent yearly subscription that includes all platforms (the admission to each platform is, of course, conditioned on being approved as a licensed developer by the respective console manufacturer)."

My understanding is this would work in the same way you would export Android, Linux or iOS etc. It's currently in an Early-Access program. They intend to launch this in Q4 2023 with PS5 coming later in Q2 2024.

Guild Alpha is back!

Our first sprint has been a success and we are now starting our second.
Join us for this sprint

Read our full announcement.

Make a proposal

And talk to us about the Guild on matrix

slumberingcat, (edited )
@slumberingcat@easymode.im avatar

@csddumi The idea behind Guild Alpha is to help organise labour within the open source community, to tackle larger problems that projects lack the resources for and increasing those able to contribute to open-source by acting as a set training wheels and a safe space.

I worked with Guild Alpha in their first sprint working on the user migration issue for @bookwyrm. I have since joined the guild in a volunteer editor role to help improve their processes. I will also be taking part in the second sprint.

If you're interested in contributing to open-source projects but aren't sure where to start. This could be for you. Any & All skill sets welcome. We'll find some way to help you contribute and learn. Stop by our Matrix room for more information.

If you have an idea for us to work on please feel free to make a proposal or again stop by our Matrix room.

hey, the side of fedi, i am summoning you

does anybody have any sources or literature or any ideas about how armed forces would function in an anarchist society?

i am just thinking how an anarchist army would work because i am writing one for my fantasy book and i can't seem to pin it down due to the lack of any military knowledge

pass this post around pls

thank you

slumberingcat,
@slumberingcat@easymode.im avatar

@mynameistillian I researched this topic a few years ago.

I'd found this resource: https://anarchyinaction.org/index.php?title=Shinmin_Prefecture. I specifically link to that article as you can see they had to defend against Japan and Russia. So there's probably some interesting bits for you there.

Typically Anarchists are against "Armies" as an offensive force like most countries have nowadays. Anarchists talk about defensive Militias. Specifically the kind that "engages in a defense activity or service, to protect a community, its territory, property, and laws" composed of members of that community.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia

Feel free to ask more questions.

EDIT3: i'm going to close this to new submissions since they've slowed to a trickle now

new to mastodon? do you make cool shit? if you've got under 100 followers, reply to this with 1-4 images of stuff you've made and i will boost you to my 5.8k followers, because i want people who do creative work to find a place on mastodon

please note i will be spacing out boosts to not spam my followers too much

EDIT2: if you're a composer (or do similar non-visual work) you should probably drop a link to where people can listen to your work. maybe add cover art if you have any

EDIT: if i miss your post it's likely you're on an instance mine has muted, I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about that

@eniko I attempt to make interesting . Currently in the process of moving to the and making a game.

But for now here's a prototype of a game based around called "HisText" that I'd worked on in Unity.

Get Ready for Techno-babble:
If I remember correctly the idea was that in an alternate timeline where the internet didn't take off and Teletext grew and filled its place. You play as a worker for a body that certifies Teletext Cartridges (TeleCart). TeleCart's allow for Custom Firmware and applications to be loaded onto the common place Portable TV. Due to lack of contact with an influential around their submission of a TeleCart, with the intent of spreading their holy book. Under protest you are sent to their private enclave to investigate. Talk to residents of the enclave and investigate the Church's activities to unravel a mystery that really isn't your job. Also Eldritch.

It was fun coming up with that whole world. I intend to come back to it in .

A small glimpse at a now on hold project based around Teletext.
