Well that's a first. Attacked by a seemingly unhealthy rat on a sidewalk in East Van. Had to kick it away a few times, reported it to the city. Keep your eyes open people!
Can I tell you all something? It's probably going to offend some of you but that's ok; that's not my intention.
...I don't give a shit about Bruce Springsteen and I never have. I don't like that he's called The Boss because his music has never risen above the level of "ok" to me.
Say it with me: Everything out of #Trump's mouth is a lie and/or projection/confession.
Via Andrew Prokop:
Predicting the future is diffic. But I feel confident that, if Biden is reelected, US will have elections in subseq yrs. Feel free to screenshot & dunk on me if I am wrong
Trump: If we don’t win on Nov 5th, I think our country is going to cease to exist. It could be the last election we ever have. I actually mean that. If we don’t win, I think this could be the last election we ever have
There's a lot of talk about radical innovation on software teams as if every single team is always forever engaged in radical innovation. I think this is quite demonstrably false and moreover, would be a pretty terrible yardstick for all work in the world. That being said, the goal pursuit of radical innovation IS different than goal pursuit of other forms of work and there's a lot we should try to understand about it for software teams!
@grimalkina most of the teams I've worked on are barely pursuing innovation at all except in the sense of "solving this specific problem that we have right now".
while i was goofing around with #globalTalk, I ended up searching for some old Simpsons icons for my classic Macintosh (an LC 475), and stumbled upon an entry on the garden called Banned Simpsons Icons. (Who could resist downloading something with a title like that?)
They were called the "Banned Simpsons Icons" because Fox once sent the artist - Jeanette Foshee - a cease & desist letter for her uncannily perfect renderings of the copyrighted characters. they planned on suing her for every penny she made ($0.00) on them. this was back in 1995.
i thought - hell, what a wild story. why don't I get a hold of the artist - jeanette - and find out more about her banned icon set?
what i stumbled upon broke my heart, and i ended up spending a week digitally preserving what i could find.
"Pierre #Poilievre is so clearly campaigning - and has been since he became the CPC leader. Is this really okay with everyone?
No wonder he's ahead in the polls. HE IS CAMPAIGNING NON-STOP.
Meanwhile, PM Trudeau has a country to lead, legislation to develop, world leaders to meet, and so on."
👉 Taxpayers have paid for PP to flit around Canada campaigning for the last 2 years. The Conservative leader has higher expenses than the Prime Minister.
@Sir_Osis_of_Liver@gemelliz@kathrynmathias solid point. with luck this nonstop campaigning means he will say enough dumb shit before the election that he poisons his own chances
@gemelliz@CanadianCrone@Sir_Osis_of_Liver@kathrynmathias yeah, the CPC is basically guaranteed a victory at this point because the Liberals have done a bad job with housing and healthcare - we can only hope that CPC is kept to a minority
failing some egregious and public idiocy on the part of PP/CPC (which is always a possibility)
Honestly, I thought Biden's #SOTU was really good overall. I didn't agree with everything he said, and definitely had moments where I wondered how much his administration could feasibility commit to all these promises.
But, compared to the garbage Republican candidates have been spewing, it's still worlds better.
@deadsuperhero i don't know if this was a consideration or not, but these kinds of long-term goals are things that the Republicans can't really compete on... "we're going to remove more reproductive rights and take away women's right to vote and keep the trans folks out of the bathroom" just doesn't sell very well
My favorite film of all time is Until the End of the World by Wim Wenders. It’s an insane film (the director’s cut adds so much to it that it is about 5 1/2 hours and has only been screened in theaters a handful of times. Criterion released it finally a few years ago.
What I love about the film are a few things - one that it has a soundtrack that the characters in the film hear. That is the music is all what the characters are hearing and interacting with.
Absolutely agree. Hopefully something comes of the current ceasefire framework and the blocking of aid (which is unconscionable) stops. But failing that I hope that the airlift could get bigger - even the Berlin airlift has to have started small.
Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"
I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.
What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?
@3janeTA@RickiTarr I'll +1 the cultural and familial influence here: I was brought up in a family where "children should be seen and not heard" meant asking for things directly was discouraged and it's still difficult
Okay, let me try to ask this question, in a coherent way!
When we hear certain kinds of music, arrangements and tones, we associate them with feelings and emotions, like this sounds magical or whimsical, this sounds bouncy and happy, or dark and tragic. Do you think that is this is innate, like the combination of certain notes and tones just illicit these feelings in most people or is it because we've seen it related to these kinds of emotions on the radio or in movies and TV?
@opalmirror@RickiTarr is that social training or more of a musical Overton window where your perception of the emotional positivity is based on what you've been exposed to? I certainly don't recall being told that any music was happy or sad
