To all the people designing user interfaces: if you have a select dialog of some sort that only has one option to choose from: think of replacing that useless dialog with a five second notification popup for information.

yacc143,
@yacc143@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit Which is great if the user happens to be distracted for the 5 seconds.

Or for whatever reason does not manage to read the text in 5 seconds. (Think: how cool cut off texts are where you need to use UI tricks to enlarge the window somehow to get the complete text, or scroll it somehow. Or puzzle out the meaning. Two common reasons: Translations to more verbose languages, and yes, older users who have used UI preferences to scale up text fonts.)

yacc143,
@yacc143@mastodon.social avatar

@publicvoit Now if the notice is without relevance, the notice might be nicer because you might avoid the popular "popup too big for phone screen to dismiss" game I play on my mobile, which can be annoying.

If it contains critical important information, OTOH it can be rather irritating.

No not really.

You are assuming the "techbros" are all Tech Geniuses. Or at least Business Geniuses.

In reality, most of them are just mediocre people who happened to be at the right moment in the right place. And even a bigger part of them has just inherited their fortunes.

Boeing is too big, and too vital to US interests, to be allowed to fail. But it's also pretty clear that the rot inside the company goes deep and wide. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/03/boeing-door-plug-probe-stalled-by-missing-records-overwritten-security-footage/

Update for clarity: I am totally behind the idea of letting this rogue company go bankrupt, and then nationalizing it -- and then firing -- and prosecuting -- senior management.

@tcely @dangillmor
Now if Boeing was just a commercial plane maker.

Then this would be still a problematic idea.

But they also happen to be one of the bigger US defence contractors.

    That's what you get when you go commercial with running a university.

    Of course the commercial interests of the sales department are more important than irrelevant academic traditions.

    And if a significant part of their customers want “honesty” about the greatness of the People's Republic of China and its spectacular successful humanitarian model, then it's not too much of an ask that you take that into an account when writing your so-called papers, right?

    My parents-in-law literally kept the favourite sweets of our daughter always at home. You know, nothing is as much fun as returning a kid on a sugar high.

    And my father, the traitor, I mean he's an MD, so he should be able to feed a grand kid healthy. He introduced her to eating Nutella with a long cocktail spoon directly out of the glass. It's unhealthy as a breakfast spread, but in concentrated massed form???

    Why should they? Practically all US media is corporate owned, right, as it should be, and how is it in their owners interest for them to distribute anti-corporate messages even if they happen to be facts. The peons prefer entertainment anyway, not news.

    There is a reason why private owned media and the right hate our European style public, independent media. If done correctly, that provides a basic of relatively bias free, trustable news to large parts of the population.

    Imagine if all the collective money spent of “self driving cars” had been spent on public transport.

    As in, not cars - which are ultimately bad solutions for most of the world - but punctual and pervasive clean-energy public trams, trains, and buses.

    It’d have cost less and been far more useful for far more people. Including non-drivers. And actually be here. Today. Working.

    yacc143,
    @yacc143@mastodon.social avatar

    @mattwilcox Self driving cars would be nice. They are just a bit more complicated than they were sold to us (especially from certain boy geniuses)

    Public transport, OTOH, works. To be precise, it works, where it works. It kind of stops to work in sparsely populated areas. Kind of, the issue is the spread, not the low numbers, modern electrical trains beat cars in energy use even if only one or two passengers are on board.
