There’s one crucial point on which the #Dutch will still keep the faith with #Europe: #Ukraine. Just like #Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Netherlands’ new far-right government will stick with Ukraine. The incoming government will support Kyiv, truly, deeply and constantly. As I have previously written, paying obeisance at the western world’s newest shrine, Kyiv, appears to have become a purity test of sorts. https://www.rashmee.com/dutch-far-right-geert-wilders-ukraine/
"Just like Apple, Meta is behaving as though the #DMA permits it to carry on its worst behavior, with minor cosmetic tweaks around the margins. Just like #Apple, #Meta is daring the #EU to enforce its democratically enacted laws, implicitly promising to pit its billions against #Europe’s institutions to preserve its right to spy on us."
Although France is a founding member of the European Union, surveys show Euroscepticism is on the rise in the nation. In the lead up to the EU elections, RFI looks at what's feeding the disenchantment and what, if anything, can be done to rekindle the flame.
#Austerity#Populism#Europe#Globalization#Inequality: "Governments have repeatedly adjusted fiscal policy in recent decades. We examine the political effects of these adjustments in Europe since the 1990s using both district-level election outcomes and individual-level voting data. We expect austerity to increase populist votes, but only among economically vulnerable voters, who are hit the hardest by austerity. We identify economically vulnerable regions as those with a high share of low-skilled workers, workers in manufacturing and in jobs with a high routine-task intensity. The analysis of district-level elections demonstrates that austerity increases support for populist parties in economically vulnerable regions, but has little effect in less vulnerable regions. The individual-level analysis confirms these findings. Our results suggest that the success of populist parties hinges on the government's failure to protect the losers of structural economic change. The economic origins of populism are thus not purely external; the populist backlash is triggered by internal factors, notably public policies."
This is the first in a series of a tribute to #Pompeii Dried flowers against a backdrop of photos of paintings and mosaics that have been unearthed at the site. This first one is a black and white with a slight sepia tone. I'm working on others in color. Enjoy.
Nine European citizens, the vast majority of whom are female, were arrested alongside Greek students for taking part in the brief and symbolic occupation of the National University of Athens Law School, in solidarity with the plight of the Palestinian people. Ahead of summoning important witnesses and interpreters, the court postponed its hearing and ordered that all of the accused be set free. However, Greek Police proceeded to detain the Europeans: a male Spanish citizen is held in the Directorate for Aliens and eight women are held at the closed detention centre of Amygdaleza. All of them are jailed in inhumane conditions ahead of deportation, treated as a threat to public order by decision of the Chief of Police, obviously under instructions by PM Mitsotakis, according to written reports. #repression#arrested#deportation#eu#HumanRights#europe#palestinian#Solidarity https://diem25.org/statement-by-yanis-varoufakis-on-athens-law-school-detainees/
'The European Union on Friday banned four more Russian media outlets from broadcasting in the 27-nation bloc for what it calls the spread of propaganda about the invasion of Ukraine and disinformation as the EU heads into parliamentary elections in three weeks.'
Waiting for [#JUICE ...] NASA's #Juno probe recently took images of the surface of #Europe, an icy moon of #Jupiter. And what a surprise! The #ice crust has shifted, distorted, ...
So what happened? Are these changes the result of interactions with the vast oceanic area lying beneath Europa's surface?
Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.
We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.
Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger #DigitalEU.
This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!
But a press release or longer text for transparency would be fine. Many people don't know why your old instance is given up. And we are curious if we'll find only the commission on Mastodon or more organisations and important politicians?
In the comments here you see: we need answers to understand all that.
