It is April Fool's Day. I don't do pranks but I like to think of myself as reassuringly nonsensical all year round, so have some confusing penguins and fish before I go to bed.
The South Taranaki Bight is home to blue #whales, Māui and Hector’s #dolphins, kororā (little #penguins), and key fishing grounds. You may already know that it is under threat once again by the possibility of #SeabedMining. Trans Tasman Resources ( #TTR ) is seeking consent to #mine the seabed of the South Taranaki Bight - to dig up to 50 million tonnes of ironsands a year for over 30 years, dumping 45 million tonnes back onto the seafloor.
We’ve fought them before alongside our friends from Ngāti Ruanui, the local community, KASM, and other environmental groups.
TTR is now back before the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) with another chance to make a case for mining the seabed. The hearings begin tomorrow (13 March) in Hāwera and you can watch the livestream here.

"‘Catastrophic’ loss: Huge colonies of emperor penguins saw no chicks survive last year as sea ice disappears
(...) Four out of five emperor penguin colonies analyzed in the Bellingshausen Sea, west of the Antarctic Peninsula, saw no chicks survive last year as the area experienced an enormous loss of sea ice, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Nature Communications Earth & Environment.
This widespread “catastrophic breeding failure” is the first such recorded incident, according to the report, and supports grim predictions that more than 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be “quasi-extinct” by 2100 as the world warms."
The survival of each new generation of emperor #penguins relies on the presence of ice beneath those tiny feet. As many biologists have feared, the unseasonably early disappearance of Antarctica’s winter sea ice last year proved disastrous for the species.
Using satellite imagery, researchers found that four of five observed emperor penguin colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea region of western #Antarctica experienced “catastrophic breeding failure,” meaning that no chicks born in 2022 are believed to have survived. #Climate#ClimateCrisis
Ten year fishing limit around African penguin colonies gets thumbs-up
The government’s decision to limit fishing in the waters around South Africa’s six African penguin colonies will give the endangered birds a better chance to recover their dwindling population, said BirdLife South Africa.
"#Penguins on #Antarctica may not have much immunity to the disease, since the virus has not been documented on the continent until now. Outbreaks among penguins in South America and Africa show their vulnerability. The birds, which like to waddle together in packed colonies, are not particularly good at social distancing."
