#MediaLiteracy #FactChecking #Disinformation #Misinformation: "When it comes to not falling for misinformation, being aware of our human fallibilities, such as our quickness to believe what we want to believe, is a good first step. Research shows that even being more reflective in general can "inoculate" us against believing fake news.

But it's not the only thing that we can do. In particular, researchers have found there are several simple, concrete strategies that we all can (and should) use, especially before we're tempted to share or repeat a claim, to verify its accuracy first.

One of my favourites comes with a nifty acronym: the Sift method. Pioneered by digital literacy expert Mike Caulfield, it breaks down into four easy-to-remember steps."

“We agree w/the Oversight Board’s argument that our existing approach is too narrow” because it only applies to speech & not altered actions, Meta VP of Policy Monika Bickert said in a stmnt.

What are some things educators might think about when using tools, especially when thinking about student/instructor/"user" privacy?

I was recently on this panel, where we shared a few different approaches to this. (Spoiler: I'm the skeptic who brings a approach to these new tools.)

2024 is the biggest election year in human history, as people in at least 64 countries head to the polls ‼️

It has never been more important to create more space between what we read and how we react. Let's breathe deeply and endeavor to shed light, not heat, so that we can make well informed decisions all around the globe.

Here is a great resource that we can share with our friends and family: https://clemson.libguides.com/voting/media-literacy

#FoxNews’s #HarrisFaulkner hosted a panel on Mon afternoon to discuss a #SNL sketch mocking #POTUS #Biden. In short order…things went in a different direction.
Faulkner turned to #JonathanKott, fmr aide to Sen #JoeManchin….
“I will say this,” Kott offered. “I would rather have a president who maybe has a stutter once in a while than one who spews #ConspiracyTheory, #racist nonsense & has dinner w/ #Nazis.”

Tammy Bruce, a #conservative radio host, took issue w/that statement.
…If Bruce’s main source of #news is #RightWing media like #FoxNews, though, she might never have heard about that dinner. In November & the first half of December of 2022, the incident was mentioned in 89 segments on #CNN & more than twice that number on #MSNBC. On #Fox, though? It was only mentioned seven times, total.

This is meant to inform policies, i.e. identify the most harmful techniques, and teach people to recognize them.

Important considerations for public health

“Science writer Tim Radford once said: ‘Don’t overestimate your reader’s knowledge and don’t underestimate their intelligence.’ People may not be familiar with specific jargon or analysis methods, but that doesn’t mean they can’t understand tricky concepts. What it does mean is that we need to work at engagement and communication.”

How online misinformation exploits ‘information voids’ —and what to do about it
“It might no longer be enough for search providers to combat misinformation and disinformation by just using automated systems to deprioritize these sources. Indeed, genuine, lasting solutions to a problem that could be existential for democracies needs to be a partnership between search-engine providers and sources of evidence-based knowledge.”
