Since October 7th, I've joined protests, fundraising events for Gaza, and students on university campuses.
As a Jew and someone who has a ton of friends and family in Israel, I want to share some thoughts on claims of antisemitism in student encampments and the broader Palestinian solidarity movement:
A fifth-grader from #Brownsville ISD reported being bullied by his principal. Five days later, he was handcuffed and detained. He spent 3 days in solitary confinement.
This week: When #Brownsville ISD had an 11-year-old boy arrested and placed in #solitary confinement, we dug deeper. What we found was horrifying: Over 75 fifth-grade students have been arrested there this year.
We can at least HOPE that the world's children have teachers who are patient enough to share -- and be allowed to share -- clear and fact-based historical knowledge.
She Campaigned for a #Texas School Board Seat as a #GOP Hard-Liner. Now She’s Rejecting Her Party’s Extremism.
Courtney Gore, a Granbury ISD school board member, has disavowed the far-right platform she campaigned on after finding no evidence that #students were being indoctrinated by the district’s curriculum. Her defiance has brought her backlash.
"The University administration respects all student protests, just not this one. Students have fought for many important causes over the years, and their right to protest is sacrosanct. In this case, however, we must arrest and slander them.
“We will not look back and regret this decision. Although we were wrong about not admitting women, abolitioning racial quotas, US involvement in Vietnam, and divesting from apartheid South Africa, we are confident that this time is different."
From my oldest, at Virginia Commonwealth University where students were pepper sprayed last night. Remember this is the generation that experienced school shootings and feels abandoned by the adults and systems. #students#protests#columbia#Gaza
The date of the general election seems designed to disenfranchise young people as much as possible, since most university students who vote do so at their term-time address. Universities are in recess on 4 July & many students will be at their parents’ or between university accommodation. Please make sure anyone you know in this situation registers at an appropriate address, preferably with a postal vote.
“It shocked me that a district I had grown up in was not only characterizing my identity as a lifestyle, as a choice, but it was calling it alternative and inherently sexual.”
From 2023: This Texas student fought back against #censorship at their school, and became part of a national movement for #books ...
For years when #teaching exponential functions I ask “Why is the global human #population over a billion fewer people than what we would predict using a perfectly #exponential model and population figures from the 1950s and 1960s?”
Until about 5 years ago my #students always said “people don’t want big families anymore” an OK answer. But, now? they all say “the model doesn’t account for enough death”
Community members chanted “Classrooms, not courtrooms!,” “Homework, not handcuffs!” “Education, not incarceration!,” and “Free, free Timothy!” as a young #Brownsville resident emerged from Cameron County juvenile court.
This Influential #Conservative Group Is Making it Harder for #Idaho Districts to Fix Their Schools
The Idaho Freedom Foundation has gone beyond the #education culture wars by targeting local bond and levy #elections, which districts rely on heavily to build and repair #schools.
Dear UK #Students, get yourselves on the #ElectoralRoll right now as you will be at home in July. Tell you families, tell your neighbours, tell your friends.
