I've contributed a few things, instigated others, and still believe in the positive potential of technology. If the internet is broken, I probably had a hand in it (mea culpa). I still believe we can fix it.

Believer in the good in people, in the power of communal action, in personal responsibility, and in reaching out to the other side to find common grounds.

I've decided to ACTIVELY decouple from Twitter: Every day, I go back and DM at least 10 of my followers, telling them I've moved here and to follow me here instead (I remove them as followers after that DM). A number of them have set up accounts as a result.

Please do the same if you're more active here than on That's how you can help the

The anti-Meta can only achieve one thing: make sure that loses to the Bluesky protocol. Is that what people here want?

As an advocate, I don't.

Meta joining the Fediverse is like AOL joining the internet: something that will bring a mass amount of people in, create some friction, but ultimately make the net better as more people federating on , , , and other parts of the Fediverse make open protocols that much stronger.

We need more utopian fiction.

We need more people believing the world can be better.

We need more optimism.

When everyone else thinks things are bad and getting worse, buck the trend and believe we can fix it.

Hey @pluralistic isn't requiring registration to read a story part of the you talk about? Because here's a prime example

Please practice what you preach and try the make the net a better place (eg. You could hold this content on your own blog, craphound.com, instead of locking it in a walled garden)

guide for newcomers

  1. Be Kind. This place thrives on kindness, unlike the other place
  2. CW stands for content warning. If you think it might upset someone, put a content warning on it. It allows people to click through.
  3. Follow, follow, follow. The more people you follow, the better the experience here.

In this age of AI, I have a crazy idea: A person-made directory of sites that are individually crafted by individuals (think Yahoo! in the early days). No algorithms, just human edited directory lists. Would you visit such a site?

Thinking through the Reddit crisis, I'd recommend that @ernest and @dessalines contact the creators of the most popular reddit clients and work together to piece a bridge that would take the calls that were made to and translate them into API calls that would go to and

Having those clients run in the same way against the equivalents would reduce friction for end-users and potentially help a lot of moderators who rely on them.

I just got around to this post by @Jbat which is is a must read:

What worries me is the longer term impact. When serendipity is lost at the college level, what does it do to the society we're building in the future?

So here's a crazy idea: require that ANY write-off by a corporation be forced to create a clear public benefit. For example, a tax write off on creative work (like what WBD is doing with movies) would require that the work be released in the public domain; a tax write-off on research would require that patent rights on said research expire; a tax write-off on assets would require a drop on the price of said assets to the public.

This sounds like a pretty big deal: At a time when there is no clear leader in Meta Horizon OS could get some value out of this openness. When coupled with 's efforts to integrate with the , it may show there is an emerging trend towards openness at the company:
