#KennethSmith, a prisoner on death row in #Alabama who survived a previous state execution attempt by lethal injection in Nov. '22, is set to be executed by a "new method" on Jan. 25 that deprives the person of #oxygen by placing a mask over their face and pumping in pure #nitrogen gas.
No one knows what the process will be like or how it was developed. Alabama apparently lacks all of the resources it needs for lethal injection, as do other states.
What I missed at first, and then read somewhere, is that these are not #embryos, but zygotes. If the law really pertains to zygotes, women’s ovaries would be owned by the state, and getting a hysterectomy would be a criminal act. And can’t just bust on female zygotes: gotta clamp down on all those sperm swimming around. Not to mention the ones jettisoned into socks, and condoms, and random pies.
"Alabama has carried out the first execution of a death row inmate in the US using nitrogen gas, an untested procedure which the prisoner’s lawyers had argued amounted to a form of cruel and unusual punishment banned under the US constitution. ...

As AP reports, law officials in Alabama are seeking the phone records of Alabama Catholic priest Alex Crow, who has fled to Europe with an 18-year-old girl he's accused of having groomed. Why the interest in Crow's phone records? As AP states,
"Alabama law prohibits sexual contact between a school employee and a student 19 or younger."

The method, known as “nitrogen hypoxia”, theoretically works by replacing the oxygen breathed by the prisoner with nitrogen. In minutes that would reduce oxygen levels in the individual’s brain leading to death by suffocation.
The fact that the Republican Party is just as willing to ban IVF as they are abortion tells me that they are about controlling womens' bodies, not protecting the lives of the unborn.
