#OpenAI doing the thing they are building tools to facilitate everyone to do (imitate the likeness & creative output of real people)... is exactly the signal we should all be recognising it to be.
We've all been told that our ability to grind out work-value is what we exist for... but even that poor measure of our worth is fair game to those big enough to steal it.
I was bored so I did the unthinkable. Well, to me it was always unthinkable as I have always been anti- #ai. But, out of curiosity I subscribed to #ChatGPT -4o and have been feeding various essays, poems, and posts from my various websites and asking for explications and such. And wow does #ChatGPT4o have a great deal of just wonderful things to say about me. I will admit getting all this truly high praise is seducing.
Okay. So I have been using #ChatGPT for a couple of hours and there is no doubt in my mind that many, many, many college students are using #ChatGPT4o to write essays. I am so, so, so sorry #AcademicChatter professors and lecturers. I am so glad this was not around when I was in school. First colleges across the country started shutting down extensive #writing courses/programs and now this. Oh, what a loss of a good #education.
#ScarlettJohansson is threatening #legal action against #OpenAI for copying her #voice for its latest #AI model, GPT-4o, which will be accessible through #ChatGPT.
In a statement provided to The Washington Post by Johansson’s publicist, she claimed that she received an offer from OpenAI CEO #SamAltman in Sept to be the voice of its AI system. Johansson… declined….
They are completely missing the point of their product. #ChatGPT and other #ai#chatbots are not our friend, and we don’t want them to be!
(If you spend a lot of time „talking to“ chatbots, please go outside where people are. Seriously!)
It is a tool we use for super annoying tasks —write an ALT-tag for an image, fix my shell script, translate something. And we still have to double check everything it does. We can’t and we won’t trust it. (1/2)
I was curious if a niche blog post of mine had been slurped up by #ChatGPT so I asked a leading question—what I discovered is much worse. So far, it has told me:
• use apt-get on Endless OS
• preview a Jekyll site locally by opening files w/a web browser (w/o building)
• install several non-existent #Flatpak “packages” & extensions
It feels exactly like chatting w/someone talking out of their ass but trying to sound authoritative. #LLMs need to learn to say, “I don’t know.”
This is a fundamental mistake that people make when trying to assess whether LLMs are an appropriate tool to use in optimizing a process, function, or service:
"LLMs are not search engines looking up facts; they are pattern-spotting engines that guess the next best option in a sequence."
This terrific article is a great explainer on how they work and their limitations.
I can't wait to try it myself 😀 , AI demo's are notoriously unreliable.
"We plan to give access to a new Voice Mode for GPT-4o in alpha to ChatGPT Plus users in the coming weeks. With GPT-4o, using your voice to interact with ChatGPT is much more natural. GPT-4o handles interruptions smoothly, manages group conversations effectively, filters out background noise, and adapts to tone." https://openai.com/index/how-the-voices-for-chatgpt-were-chosen/ #openai#chatgpt#voicemode#ai
#AI#GenerativeAI#OpenAI#ChatGPT: "This contradiction is at the heart of what makes OpenAI profoundly frustrating for those of us who care deeply about ensuring that AI really does go well and benefits humanity. Is OpenAI a buzzy, if midsize tech company that makes a chatty personal assistant, or a trillion-dollar effort to create an AI god?
The company’s leadership says they want to transform the world, that they want to be accountable when they do so, and that they welcome the world’s input into how to do it justly and wisely.
But when there’s real money at stake — and there are astounding sums of real money at stake in the race to dominate AI — it becomes clear that they probably never intended for the world to get all that much input. Their process ensures former employees — those who know the most about what’s happening inside OpenAI — can’t tell the rest of the world what’s going on.
#OpenAI strikes Reddit deal to train its AI on your posts https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/16/24158529/reddit-openai-chatgpt-api-access-advertising
“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up-to-date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in #ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit,” #Reddit CEO Steve Huffman says.
The GPT store is slowly rolling out to free users, which is super exciting because...
Codepen Link Generator 🔗
You can ask this GPT in any chat (using @) to build a Codepen link with the generated HTML, CSS, and JS. This is super valuable when you want to turn a code-snippet into something you can interact with!
This has been valuable when working with my new library (also a custom GPT), and asking this GPT to turn those samples into links!
“The certain knowledge that Kevin Roose is a credulous dumbass who makes a jingle-bell sound if he nods his head real fast only does so much to moderate the obscenity and offensiveness of his ascribing ‘playful intelligence’ and ‘emotional intuition’ to a predictive text generator.”
Kevin Roose so desperately wants to live in the futures tech companies are selling that he’ll eagerly do their PR for them and buy into whatever illusions of intelligence they put in front of him so he can trick himself into believing they’ll actually be realized this time.
🤖 NetBSD’s New Policy: No Place for AI-Created Code
— @linuxiac
“New development policy: code generated by a large language model or similar technology (e.g. ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) is presumed to be tainted (i.e. of unclear copyright, not fitting NetBSD’s licensing goals) and cannot be committed to NetBSD.”
Am I the only one skeptical about modern developers focusing so much on making AI look and sound like humans? Is it god’s syndrome “create them to reflect their image” kind of thing? Because what I need from AI as an individual is do the mundane tasks and be recognizable. I don’t need it to be able to impersonate a virtual friend or anything.
