@fediverse What type of social media do you feel is lacking most in the fediverse?
To elaborate, there are a lot of different types of social media already on the fediverse such as microblogs, regular blogs, image sharing, link sharing and video sharing.
Personally, I'd love to see a gaming-focused social media platform on the fediverse.
A big thing that's lacking at the moment is not so much new platforms, but dedicated instances using the existing Fediverse platforms.
A great example of what I mean is something like Urbanists.video. It's a PeerTube instance dedicated to videos about urban planning, cycling, and transport.
We need more dedicated instances like that for more special interest communities.
Just imagine a PeerTube and LemmyBB instance dedicated to baking. Or Buddhism. Or the global Armenian diaspora. Or folk music. Or quilt makers. Or charity fundraisers. Or particular social issues. Or high school principals. Or a particular university. Or independent short films. Or netball. Or watercolour artists.
The more dedicated communities like that exist, the stronger the Fediverse ecosystem is as a whole.
@mitexleo NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Depends on what #Fediverse project you join, you actually join DIFFERENT communities!!!!!!!!
Calckey, Misskey, Soapbox and etc - they all have AWFUL community that you 100% dislike!
Please, don't join ANY of those communities and keep be active in #Mastodon !
Well, I miiiight be able to squeeze a personal instance out of the AWS free tier. Maybe.
With little else running on it, and slow to respond on every backend hit.
That would take most of the joy out of self hosting and server admin, and preclude a lot of experimental bots I’d keep to local only posts for testing.
I just realised I was paying $30/month for an old Dropbox I used to pay $10/month for.
Goodbye Dropbox, hello $2.49/month Google Drive!
Check your monthly billings...
Please, give up on Calckey, since I'm going to block calckey.social very soon for inapprociate for me posts. It has a very bad community that I don't recommend at all.
Each #Fediverse project has it's own community. Each instance/server has it's own community.
Excellent deep dive on the current state of the #fediverse and #mastodon, with a detailed history of the movement to #decentralize#social, and predictions about where we go from here.
As you migrate to #Mastodon from #Twitter, it’s helpful to understand that while the #Fediverse is decentralized, there are ways to discover other people with your interests, and (just as importantly) help them discover you.
Adding “#fedi22” to your bio and registering your profile at https://fediverse.info/explore/people puts your profile in a directory to facilitate discovery based on shared interests.
It’s weird having different accounts in the #Fediverse universe that can talk to each other. I can have indepth discussions between myself and myself…. 😜
You can also create your own based on the existing themes, or the themes found in the mentioned site above. Just don't forget to share your own themes. ^_^
Something's wrong with me, I'm now checking out my third #Fediverse platform, #Calckey.social 🤪 Have to say the interface there is pretty slick. Lots of customization just like Akkoma
How to build and grow a diverse and robust sets of new server communities of all Fediverse servers is one big question we think we can organize around helping.

It's official, my #Fediverse/#Mastodon feed is now officially providing better info than my Tweetdeck window (it's been better than the algorithm-driven #Twitter UI since January). Only thing missing: 1. local reporters 2. some international outlets (Asia/Latin America) 3. storm chasers and 4. misc. individuals I follow who haven't moved, but don't post much (mostly just reply).
A #feditip to those trying other #fediverse software: Treat your new account as you would signing-up in a new #SNS.
A more detailed #feditips: 1. Let each of your account grow separately.
It is fine to follow certain groups and users. These are your ‘core’ interaction. But for the rest, keep them separate and let it grow organically.
2. Define a certain theme or topic or purpose for your new account.
Since we are in an interconnected network, you will end up having a major overlap between your first account and your succeeding accounts. Which might confuse you later (as well as your followers).
For example, I still post my new articles through my @youronlyone account, for two major reasons: Follower Badge, and #Indieweb support via #Bridgy.
3. Use this opportunity to learn how discovery, growth, and reach, works in the #MycelialNetwork (or #SocialWeb)
By letting your new account grow organically, and keeping the overlap with your first account at a minimum, you will be able to observe how discovery, growth, and reach, works in the network.
The Misskey and Calckey accounts are organically growing. I also discover new people, new content, that I haven't seen in my #Mastodon account (@youronlyone). And I asked myself, why? As I find answers to that question, I slowly adjust my interactions, and this in turn helped me discover more and reach wider.
The Mycelial Network (as I now prefer to call the Fediverse), is huge. When it started in 2008, it was small, and we all know each other. Today, I've probably only discovered and reached 0.5% of the network. It grew that fast.
@Khayman you'd be pleased to know I've reduced my #fediverse accounts to 2 one in Mastodon, my usual main one in vmst.io and one in #calckey, the one you're seeing me from.
