So, apparently when using an ActivityPub enabled service, you agree to have your data harvested for the sake of corporate profits.
This has been said ad nauseam the past couple days and I would like to get proof.
Can anyone actually find the text where this exists? Whether it be connected to activitypub documents or mastodon. I just wanna see it so it's not debated anymore.
I didn't really think this was the case, but I've been wrong PLENTY of times before.
If you were to demo the #fediverse to somebody who had never heard of it, and only had time to show one single feature, what would you demo?
I don’t mean a demo that focuses on #mastodon or #lemmy or #firefish or any other software, but that focuses on the special value that the network, the fediverse, brings.
One that gets the coveted “wow” in response to the demo. Thoughts?
Antennas.
Antennas are effectively custom timelines. They work approximately like watching hashtags, but they can look for normal text as well. You can add as many phrases as you like and the results can be filtered with an ignore list.
You can make an antenna that just shows posts from specific users and notifies you when they post something new, you can make an antenna that collects posts containing or excluding certain key words, or you can make an antenna that collects only posts with files attached. You can even make an antenna consisting of “Posts from specific users” with “Show replies” checked.
Setting up
You can set up antenna by going to the More! section on your sidebar, and selecting Antennas. Press Add + to create your first. This is where you can also manage & edit previously created antennas.

4 & 5) When you click Add + you get this page to set up your antenna. I've set one up as my Calckey antenna and another to alert me when PastaThief posts. There's a lot to go through here. Expect a separate post sometime soon.

On our progressive web app you can access your antennas by selecting the UFO in the top right corner.
Clicking on the UFO button brings up all my antennas and the link to manage/edit them
Hello again #Fediverse, I may need your #fedihelp. So, here's a list of the Fediverse software I'm about to make temporary accounts for to test all the features and differences:
So, did I miss anything noteworthy? Does anyone have any tips or recommendations before I choose a server for any one of these? I'll probably be going for the most popular server on each for improved federation and maintenance.
Note: I'm using #Sharkey right now and Misskey forks are already overrepresented, so that's why it's not included.
Ich werde der ein oder andere Person einen #Fediverse#Account auf meinen #Server ermöglichen und habe dazu eine allgemeinere #Domain als meine eigene crazy-to-bike.de registriert.
Nun stellt sich noch die Frage nach der richtgen #Software für die #Instanz.
Das gefällt mir aber im Vergleich zu anderen Möglichkeiten weder optisch, noch finde ich die #Zeichenlimitierung gut.
Derzeit bin ich ja auf #Firefish unterwegs, aber das scheint den letzen Prognosen zu Folge ein höchstwahrscheinlich totes Pferd zu sein.
#Sharkey als weiteren #Misskey-Nachfolger #Fork teste ich gerade auch, was für mich eine mögliche Alternative zu Firefish ist. Aber auch dieses Projekt ist ja noch sehr frisch und in meinen Augen einfach nicht absehbar, wie dauerhaft das Ganze fortbesteht.
Auf #Friendica war ich ja auch schon eine Zeit lang unterwegs, aber das ist optisch auch sehr angestaubt und hat bei mir auf dem Server auch datenbanktechnisch rebelliert.
Ich weiß, dass es noch eine ganze Reihe Alternativen gibt, will und kann aber nicht alles durchprobieren.
Daher hoffe ich auf gute Tipps.
Wichtig ist
kein, hohes oder einstellbares Zeichenlimit
gute Strukturierung und Kategoriesierung von Lesezeichen (wie bei Firefish und Sharkey mit den Clips)
Folgen von #Hastags und / oder Begriffen (wie bei Firefish und Sharkey mit den Newspickern / Antennen)
gutes, ansprechendes und leicht bedienbares responsive Design für die Nutzung auf dem Smartphone (oder volle Unterstützung durch eine App wie bei Mastodon)
Schön wäre
Konfigurierbarkeit des Speicherverbrauchs durch die Föderation (was wird wie lange auf dem eigenen Server vorgehalten) wie bei Mastodon
automatische Löschung von Beiträgen konfigurierbar wie bei Mastodon
hohe Wahscheinlichkeit einer nachhaltigen Weiterentwicklung
Moderierte Kontoerstellung wie bei Mastodon
Je länger ich hier schreibe, denke ich, dass Mastodon für sehr vieles davon wohl die richtige Software wäre - will ich aber eigentlich aus Gründen nicht.
I'm giving Catodon.social a go.
Unfortunately Firefish.social has become so broken it doesn't even respect migration requests (let alone post downloads). So a lot of people will miss seeing my move 🫣. I suppose people will find me again over time, but that's a real shame for a server to get that neglected.
I do also have my @ArtBear account which I won't be migrating (it's just offline for DB maintenance for a few hours, don't freak out anyone).
Why Catodon?
I'm sure other projects are interesting too.
I liked how @panos interacted & was committed to community building on #firefish.social. I feel like it's important for any dev team to have in mind Community, not just features, nor just admin, nor just moderation it's all really important but community is the base. I liked how he posted his frustrations with the very large parts of the firefish project that were not a team endeavour that could be picked up & redistributed, but solely resting on only 1 individual. I like the Catodon mission statement about being a team wanting to dev for a lot of servers, and not dev for some mega flagship server (which is a vulnerability of fedi. decentralised & well distributed is good). Also the 1st set of improvement notes were really good at logical cleanup, changes & taking the good parts of stalled firefish forward again, but in a more streamlined direction.
Right away #Catodon feels like an old friend, I really missed:

Playing on a calkey instance at https://bostonsocial.online and finding setup challenging. Most of the form controls are unlabeled. I have to keep switching the screen reader between focus and browse modes, to see what field I might be filling in. I have an account, but no posts in tl. Trying to look at trending topics. Okay, my parser now (correctly) works with objects from #mastodon, #firefish, and #bovine and covers all of AS2, JSON-LD context objects, and a few actor-specific extensions from Mastodon specifically.
I also implemented some (thread safe) caching so as to not annoy myself later.
There's a lot of spit-and-polish still required and a bunch of tests still to write to explore all of the corner cases, but I can call that good for now and move on to something else for a bit.

Wisst ihr, was wirklich genial wäre. Wenn es ein Projekt geben würde, dass einen fertigen #RaspberryPi anbietet, den man nur noch anstöpseln muss, und beim ersten Start dann nur noch aussucht, welche Software man für die #Fediverse nutzen möchte. In der selbstbestimmten Gestaltung der persönlichen Timeline des #Fediverse - ohne Hintergrund-Algorithmen - ist jeder User frei, in dem er Follower und ggf. Hashtags nach Belieben abonniert oder später ev. wieder entfolgt. Diese Freiheit macht es aber auch für jeden etwas mühsamer.
Firefish jedoch erleichtert wirklich Vieles in der konsequenten Umsetzung dieser Freiheit (ok - #Friendica - hat ein anderes Bedienkonzept wie Mastodon, Akkoma oder Firefish - und bleibt bei dieser Betrachtung erst einmal außen vor). Seit dem Firefish - in der neu strukturieren Form - jetzt bei mir auch noch flüssig läuft, bin ich ziemlich begeistert, was einem da so alles für Ideen - auch der Vereinfachung - bei der praktischen Arbeit so kommen. Habe mir heute z.B. einige meiner abonnierten Hashtägs (News-Picker) neben meine sonstigen Listen in meine benutzerdefinierte Mehrfenster-Arbeitsfläche eingebaut. So etwas Tolles hatte ich mir in Mastodon immer gewünscht.
