has an active campaign for the past couple of years to encourage citizens NOT to mow their lawns, to keep dandelions available for bees and other pollinators. Dandelions are one of the first food sources for bees after waking up from a long winter. It’s essential for their survival until other flowers are available.

dahlia,

So the campaign to not mow your lawn is for the month of May, if you do mow, do so infrequently.

Also, if you own a house, you can opt to have clover coverages instead. They stay short and offer flowers to bees and less water intensive than grass.

characias ssp wulfenii, Wulfen's . This grows all over Vancouver - it's drought tolerant, evergreen, and rugged. The flowers smell like rotting meat to attract flies, as here.

Alt: 3 views of the flower clusters, large groups of dramatic yellow-green against cool blue-green foliage. Each floret has three tiny buds that open, sequentially, into acid-yellow flowers.

Cosmos Flower - can never pick a favorite flower :) Because I love all of them! This one is a high contrast B&W grown in my garden. Delicate petals and the beauty of nature, I don't believe we can live without them...

If only monarch butterflies came in pink also? I love the classic ones, but there's something about a pink and black one that appeals to me. That's the beauty of poetic license.

The Eastern Kingbird, is described as a bird in a business suit, with it's dark gray underparts and white tip to the tail. This elegant songbird can be quite aggressive, an actual tyrant, when protecting it's nest from predators.

A very fluffy type of sage, this one. It's Salvia leucantha. I love finding things like this!
