fab, to privacy

Hello fediverse,
because it's common in this space, this is a little

I'm completely new to all this Social Media stuff and I was very skeptical about it in the past. Due to the evil nature of their corporations, I avoid Facebook and Twitter like the plague. But because ActivityPub is a free protocol and not bound to corporate interests it seems interesting. I'm not sure if I'll like it or post frequently - I'm just trying it out.

I'm an enthusiastic computer, GNU/Linux and *BSD hobbyist. I like to tinker around with hard- and software in my little homelab. I'm in no way a professional or expert of any kind in the IT field. Just doing things for fun.

Also interested in Gemini and the smolnet/indieweb. The way the internet is heading these days isn't very promising. When I discovered the gemini protocol in 2021 I was imediately intrigued. So I set up my own little capsule which I now regard as my private home in the online world (link in profile).

I hope we have a good time together!

It appears that my laptop died, and it makes no sense to repair it 😢 For the last few years it served us as a home media server.

Any recommendations for a modular mini-PC? Looking for something repairable, upgradable, open, powerful enough to survive the ever-growing performance requirements.

Wer weiß was dazu? Gerne teilen!

So, I'm in the process of trying to convert an old laptop into a . Since I'm not knowledgeable enough it's has been a disaster so far. I've tried Ubuntu LXDE, Linux Mint, Manjaro XFCE and so far I've had many problems archiving what I want. So I installed what I have on my desktop which is Manjaro KDE. Is a much better experience so far and at least I've accomplish 2 things. Wish me luck.

Do you run a home server 24/7 ? (not talking about a remote vps here but actual hardware you run at your place)

Warum sich irgendeine random #SearXNG Instanz suchen, wo man nicht weiß, was der Betreiber so alles anstellt, wenn man es einfach selbst hosten kann?

I'm launching a new sister project to the self-hosted apps directory I launched a few weeks ago and am giving the a sneak peek because I need your help!

What are your favorite companion apps for the self-hosted services you deploy?

They must support software that can be self-hosted, be relatively up-to-date, and can be closed source.

Comment below or send me a DM with your suggestions. Thanks!

So my Raspberry Pi 5 arrives tomorrow but I don’t have a good use case for it 😅

I have a home server that I use for self hosting that still has capacity.

Any suggestions on what I could use the Pi for specifically? I’d like it to be useful to people other than myself. I have my home server for my personal uses.

A couple of years ago, I was using apps similar to these from 3rd parties - mostly proprietary.
I'm proud to be my own (a ) now!

I post a lot about playing or collecting games, and about cool old tech.
I'm also a pretty vocal anyarcho-communist and will post about injustices and shit.
I'm planning on making my own instance Soon:tm: when I can fix my but while that's underway, I'll be posting here.

Working on a running on a 5 to handle small-scale semi-private social organisation. Needing a calendar, some form of threaded social chat, file sharing, etc. Ideally using / / etc. standards so existing apps can talk to it. Any recommendations? (Other than a larger SD card.)

My old Orange Pi is acting up. I need a new home server. I'm not doing anything serious (file sharing, and internal web) and it'll be headless so the GPU is unimportant. Otherwise, I'm looking for a low power (preferably fanless) system that is happy running nonstop and can run FreeBSD. Thanks!

MagicLike, (edited ) to Matrix

Two things I need to find: A new Matrix homeserver (currently on matrix.org) and a good Lemmy instance...

I mean, I could selfhost both of them, but I think that would blow up my available resources...

Edit: I don't want ANY finacial offers. I am here to seek advise, to get into a discussion if an instance is actually fitting. If I would want to a "private" instance, I will do it by myself!

Dropped some updates to selfh.st/apps this morning - tiles now have visible/clickable tags, URL properties have been added for sharing custom views with others, and I've added a ton of new project icons.

I'm completely open to feedback on future improvements, but probably won't consider adding any more details to the tiles to prevent them from becoming too cluttered.
