While researching a thing I'm writing, I found this 2019 psych study on how debt relief improves cognitive function for poor people by 1/4 of a standard deviation. That is a LOT.

https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1810901116
"Reducing debt improves psychological functioning and changes decision-making in the poor" is the title of the study, in case that link requires a login.

Kinda extra proud of city councilor Willie Burnley Jr trying to get us municipal relief on medical debts.

Starting this week, people in parts of rural Massachusetts have more options for abortions. Through a new medication abortion program, Health Imperatives is making abortion care available in areas of the state that were previously without that service, like the Cape and Islands. @gbhnews mastodon.social https://www.wgbh.org/news/local-news/2023/07/03/a-long-time-coming-new-medication-abortion-program-launches-on-cape-and-islands

C’mon ! This is incredibly dangerous - and predictable if we fail to build better. Mass Ave
@CityOfBoston are you going to enforce the bikeway?
Because so far both my trips have featured this same motorist activity, which forces people on bike to enter the fray of traffic. Drivers are using the cycleway as a right turn lane AND parking in it.

On a bikeway approaching the back of a semi truck parked in it. Video leaves the bike lane to go around the truck, squeezing between live motor vehicles and a parked car in the process

On today's CCTV Cambridge What's That About? a new public records request uncovers a host of problems with the DCR decision to close Riverbend Park on Saturdays, including evidence that State Rep. Marjorie Decker blatantly lied about her position. According to the records, our Rep was privately campaigning to close the park on Saturdays while publicly claiming the opposite. Oops!

Massachusetts is launching a new tourism campaign emphasizing queer folks. I think our state has a lot to offer beyond tourism: a place for queer people and others to thrive with strong rights protections, great jobs, and wonderful people and communities.

One of the things that makes me sad is knowing every day some LGBT person decides they can't move to Massachusetts because housing is too expensive. They decide that they can't afford the rights, protections, and environment to thrive that Massachusetts offers.

I care so deeply about housing affordability because it's a crucial building block that lets people thrive. We need to make Massachusetts AFFORDABLE for us all!

This cop got away with it for years until he was caught on surveillance cameras punching a handcuffed man in the face.

This is the reason the POST commission database is useless. Years of “unsupported” complaints against him would have never shown up but now we know this was not a one-off but a pattern.

Big news in animal welfare! The State Senate today passed a measure that would ban the inhumane practice of declawing–something that usually involves removing the claws and the first bone of the toes of a cat’s front feet and sometimes also the hind feet. It’s a painful process that often results in complications and behavioral issues 1/

Breaking a campaign promise, Gov. Healey's administration has denied another public records request.

Both are important, but the scale is unquestionably different."

@thepoliticalcat @qkslvrwolf yes - we gotta pay attn to Congress and VOTE this fall! I think some of us in have an opportunity in September as well as November. Of course voting won’t save us on it’s own, but esp. on a local level it matters a lot.

The climate roadmap needs a detour – but MassDOT doesn't want to change course.

The Commonwealth is on track to miss its short-term EV fleet goals by a wide margin – but even though that strategy is falling short, state officials still refuse to invest more in public transit alternatives:

First big group ride this year with local cycling group Charles River Wheelers (CRW).

Rode through some very wealthy suburban towns (Dover is the wealthiest town in Massachusetts with median household income of $250k+)

Very fast paced group. Started with the 2nd group (15-16mph pace) but caught the first group (17-18mph pace) shortly after. I stayed with the first group and average speed of this ride is 17.9mph!

I was curious about these towns (of course) so I looked them up. The wealthiest towns in MA all keep their zoning restrictions on residential properties to be at least 1+ acre, which pushes the property price really high. I saw a lot of humongous houses in Dover and Sherborn today.

This picture (from Reddit) is basically the local politics in MA (Weston is one of the two "W towns" in MA that're 2nd and 3rd wealthiest in the state).
