I spent the last week scraping through a terabyte of GeoCities archives and collecting ALL THE buttons! In the end, I gathered 29257 unique buttons (75k with duplicates). They are available at https://hellnet.work/8831/

Check them out!

I also have the dataset (~160MB), stats and a bit about the scraping process here: https://hellnet.work/8831/stats.html

I think I'm finally ready to share my website. Been working on this off & on for over a month, it's just a simplistic web portal-type thing for all the stuff I've put out on the internet.

This is my first time making a website from scratch, so I'll likely update the design as I learn better ways of doing things. I'm in love with the old web ethos on Neocities, it encouraged me to finally make the jump!

What should I add to my '90s website?

So I'm currently toying around with NeoCities, and decided to trial it by building your classic mid '90s Geocities/Tripod/Angelfire pastiche website.

Some of the most important elements are already in place.

Tile background? Large font? Heading in bright pink with a shadow? Unusual colour choices? Random cat gifs? Under construction gif? Check! Check! Check!

In the true spirit of the '90s DIY web, some more pages (including the links page) are coming soon.

(I'm thinking of adding a page dedicated to either Britney or a nu-metal band.)

You can see the page so far here: https://that90ssite.neocities.org/

There are a few things that I want to add to make it complete, and I'm looking for suggestions.

The first, is to embed a midi file that plays automatically. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Second, it's just not going to be complete without a guestbook.

Third, any webring suggestions?

Fourth, what's the best way of adding a java chat room in 2024?

Finally, anything else that really needs to be a part of a great '90s website?

UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback! I've added more annoying GIFs, a guestbook, a links page, and a cyber cat hangout.

UPDATE 2: And added even more gifs, an amazing Amiga demo, and a ton of links.

So not to sound the alarm or anything but might be preparing to unveil an AI chatbot to help you with coding, which, 🤮

This is different from the sarcastic April 1st Daria chatbot, check the comments on the post for links to Github comments laying out the "real" chatbot

Yeah, you're really gonna see which companies are just gonna allow the AI to scrape all their stuff now. I'm a copyleft/creative commons kinda guy. But if you have art that you don't want stolen, the answer is simple.

MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE and put your art there (edit: and use that Glaze type of stuff on your art that wrecks AI, just to be sure)! Neocities is SO easy to set up! Or your own domain and hosting via porkbun, GoDaddy (non-WordPress) - anything at all other than proprietary/walled stuff!

Been fiddling around with this blog/website, need to make it a little bit better but hey, I posted a new blog entry about the nostalgia of the yesterweb. (Also will probably need to figure out the social media cards that show up when you link websites)

For creatives who want to get started with a basic HTML portfolio site on a free host like neocities, this template is helpful https://john-doe.neocities.org

Otherwise if you want a CMS and can upload/install on a server, I've tried these free ones (work on shared hosting services with PHP enabled):
https://indexhibit.org
https://automad.org
https://www.bludit.com

I love flatfile CMS so I never recc wordpress...tho I dream of flatfile indie store CMS 🤣

I added a directory section to my website for links to other people's sites as well as handy resources and other fun things on the internet that I had bookmarked.

If we're mutuals on here and I somehow missed your site, get in touch with me if you want it added to the directory. I prefer non-social media/non-commercial links on this list; check out Neocities if you want to make a free DIY website, or consider starting a blog!

If you have a website with neo cities, just know that the creator actually likes AI, and will add it again based on this post alone. Moratorium on freaking out about AI https://kyledrake.com/writings/ai

One alternative I've found is https://nekoweb.org/

I'm considering creating another personal #website, but for more formal things like writing articles and programming updates, as opposed to the usual #blog stuff I have on my #Neocities site. It'll also have a simpler design, optimised more for reading than having a fun appearance.

I'll most likely buy a domain from #Namecheap; but Neocities requires a subscription in order to use a custom #domain, so does anyone have any suggestions for cheap or free web #hosting that I could use?

I released a "final" version of my API for that also has a CLI tool.
It's a simple project to start learning about how does guile-hall work, get used to autotools and all that.

If you want take a look:

Nowt on the TV (so what’s new), some creative time.
Just discovered Mona for Mastodon, installed and finding my way around.
Introduced to earlier today - May just be what I’ve been looking for.
Can’t be doing with the hassle of complicated sites anymore, and having content forced upon me.

Should I move my website hosting from Netlify to Neocities? To support the small web etc. And the supporter plan lets you host unlimited sites!

i wish let you pay for like a year or multiple months worth of being a supporter instead of only having the one month at a time option
