Culture Club release their first single, “White Boy”

After being a regular at the Blitz Club, occasionally singing with Bow Wow Wow, and performing under the stage name Lieutenant Lush, Boy George, along with bassist Mikey Craig, started Culture Club.

And 1982 was their year.

They released their single “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” in September, and their album Kissing To Be Clever in October.

I found their music ok. Pretty common new wave pop.

But I loved the way Boy George got the usual suspect freaked out. Punk rock enough for me!

NEW SURVEY START!

KILLING JOKE - Killing Joke

Diving into a scene I'm quite unfamiliar with here, . There's some stuff I was expecting, like shouty lyrics and garage band aesthetics, but what's this? Synths right out the gate? Not really , tho' I do get Gary Numan vibes at times. Some primitive production too.

Really, this debut sounds like the band's throwing a lot of different things out there, still searching for a core identity. Potential is greatly hinted at.

of the day: Painted Romans - Heart

Since I was just given a free copy of their new, upcoming album, it's only fair that I talk about them here on Fedi for the first time 💗

I think I found out about this Norwegian 🇳🇴 project through post-punk.com if I remember correctly, and right off the bat I absolutely fell in love with them. Many of my gothy friends don't share this sentiment, but for me the sound of this release is just right up my alley. The post-punky, reverbed, chorused guitars mixed with the retro-hypnagogic-sounding synths (especially in "New Kind" and "Drives Me On") to me almost feel like a post-punk/vaporwave fusion - and if you know me, then you probably can tell that is just the perfect kind of stuff for my ears.

I love it so much. :gothsparkleheart: 💗

Their music disappeared off streaming recently, but they've mentioned that they plan to make a comeback sometime in the future :)

Did you know that the Village People tried briefly to reinvent themselves as a New Wave band?

Great Albums - 1970s: (1978). Sometimes, the kids just wanna dance. Blondie made it happen with bristling power pop anchored by “One Way or Another,” “Sunday Girl” and The Nerves’ “Hanging on the Telephone.” As for “Heart of Glass,” you look back at the racism and homophobia encoded in the “disco sucks” movement and realize the punkest thing a rock band could do in ‘78-79 was take a disco song to Number One.

ArtBear,

The The in 1983, this music vid recently got a remaster HD (1080p). A beautiful lilting pop synth track from the new wave era. It's off their debut album Soul Mining which went fairly unnoticed until after when albums like Infected, Dusk etc got more attention. The background images are so obviously a British seaside town, but I don't recognise precisely which one that is.

ArtBear,

Music videos were often so basic mid 80s. But I loved the animation in this video. You only got to see it a few times if you caught it on TV, unless were lucky & had an early VCR running before track started etc

A time when cassettes & making mixtapes for people (often off records) was a big deal. Access to music was so different. I had this on tape because I was given it by a GF in a mixtape.

ArtBear,

One of my favourite music videos. From the same period (probably 86 at a guess). Had animation from Aardman studios of claymation Creature Comforts fame & later Wallace & Gromit & many other things.

Delicious album, never left my rotation since it's release in '93?

Harmonica, bassline, drums, vocals, guitar all just killing it.

ArtBear,

Mid 80s. The days when music videos were only seen a couple of times if at all. MTV was pretty rare in the UK.

Still why not lock the band in a wardrobe and throw it off a cliff eh?

The Cure - Close To Me

I loved this when it came on TV, when I heard it on the radio. Released '79 !
