Back in 2010 I founded the #NonProfit@freetechproject which I still work for and thankfully enables me to #WFH#CovidCautious while caring for my partner who has #LongCovid -- facilitating #OnlineLearning via relaxed, fun and friendly video meetups with predominantly older people that have remained our only method of delivery since 2020. The organisation is seeking to add to its board of directors and it'd be great to have interest from UK folks passionate about increasing online engagement and tackling social isolation, as well as #EthicalTechnology#FOSS#fundraising#PublicHealth and, yes, the fact #CovidIsNotOver. Please spread the word, and/or get in touch if you're interested! Thanks! @onepict@privacydingus@kathimmel@crowgirl
#Stract is a new, #opensource, #nonprofit#search engine. It has a lot of interesting functions. For example, users can exclude known copycat sites from search queries, focus on indie blogs, or do fediverse search only.
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! We want to take this opportunity to thank the women who have helped make Science & Design what it is today: Stef Daehler, @Em0nM4stodon, @NatSecGeek, Serene, Dr. Ashley Di Battista, Abbey Ripstra, and so many more - you're amazing and thank you for everything you do 🙏
Three physics societies, IOP, APS and my employer, AIP, have formed a coalition to commit to "purpose-led publishing." They commit to investing 100% of funds back into science, publishing only content that adds to scientific knowledge, and putting research integrity ahead of profit. #Science#sciencepublishing#academia#academicchatter#nonprofit#physics
General request among my local network (primarily folks in MA, definitely only relevant to the US): anybody know a good #NonProfit lawyer that they'd recommend for helping an organization transition to 501(c)3?
I’m dealing with one company that should almost certainly be a formal non-profit, and another that is exploring the idea, and could use an hour or two of consult with someone who knows what they're talking about.
🎉 The cases for the Hush Line Personal Server arrived yesterday, and I couldn’t be happier with the result!
We worked with an OEM in Taiwan on a custom-designed, security-focused case for our forthcoming self-hosted tip line product, and what was just a concept is now real!
Only 100 exist, and they’ll go on sale after our security audit, and once all the findings are addressed. 🔥
FirstWorks, (the arts nonprofit that Rainy works for) is producing an amazing show in March. Small Island Big Song is a multimedia concert by indigenous musicians confronting climate change, taking place at The Strand Ballroom and Theatre in Providence on Friday, March 15, 7:30 PM.
ABOUT SMALL ISLAND BIG SONG
Experience a transcendent musical journey combining song, spoken word and cinematic visuals filmed over a three-year voyage across 16 island nations.
The musicians in Small Island Big Song would tell you that the ocean does not divide their island homes — it connects them. In this inspiring multimedia concert confronting climate change, renowned First Nation artists from across the Pacific and Indian Oceans unite to blend traditions and create music celebrating the ways we are all connected. From irresistible oceanic grooves to soulful island ballads, the result is a breathtakingly beautiful sound made by those who sing for the seas.
Beautiful cinematography and incredible music … one coherent, jaw-dropping piece.’’
You know, it's kinda funny to be an anarchist....and work as a manager. Even more interesting is that I'm reminded again how easy it is to not just be authoritarian in doing it too.
One of the ways I think I look at this differently than most folks is that my experience as a neurodivergent person makes it impossible to not notice that executive function - decision-making, prioritizing, budgeting resources, etc. - is a form of labor itself. So rather than see my role as telling people what to do, I collaborate with them to see what executive function labor I can do that eases their workload, while always leaving it open for them to ask me to do it differently or take that work back on if they need to.
Importantly though, when meaningful decision-making needs to happen, I collaborate with all stakeholders - staff, volunteers, people we're serving - to provide direction and consensus. Organizing this is labor too. This is what I treat as my job too.
I'm about to retire (again...) in a few weeks. I'm looking out for opportunities to give back. I'm interested in either speaking/teaching/workshops (very willing to travel) or any #OpenSource or #NonProfit groups that would like some UX help. I'd appreciate a boost!
