More and more people are buying physical DVD/Blu-ray media.

I have been saying for some time, you can't depend on streaming services to keep your favorite shows available.

Same for music.

Oppenheimer's Christoper Nolan encouraged fans to embrace "a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you."

"Christopher Nolan's explores the work of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer & colleagues to create the atomic bomb.

Yet, the film fails to depict a key part of the story, using 2 female scientists as stand-ins for ALL of the women who contributed."

Hundreds of women were essential to the Manhattan Project, including Nobel Prize winning physicist Maria Goeppert Mayer. But they are largely absent in the .

A day or two ago there was a woman on Twitter who apparently wants to sell a biopic about a woman who fought for the victims of the atomic bomb tests in New Mexico. One problem: almost everything she said in the thread is made up. It got over 12 million views.

I understand being upset other stories haven’t been told, especially in regards to harms done to one’s people. But doesn’t seem to idealize its subject and one can advocate for other stories without lying. 1/

Underappreciated trivia: One of the few elements of Los Alamos culture that got mentioned was a "ranch school." Among the kids who went there for summer camp before the bomb was built was William Burroughs, future author of "Naked Lunch" and other dystopian novels.

"Oppenheimer" is nominated for 13 Oscars this year and Christopher Nolan is a frontrunner for Best Director. Here's @IndieWire ranking of his entire filmography, from his debut in 1998 to today. Which of his 12 movies is your favorite (this poll is in order of IndieWire's preference, with "Dunkirk" as the publication's top pick)?

After last night we ended up discussing the practicalities of fission for power and for bombs. This morning's breakfast table discussion was fundamental particles and how to interpret Feynman Diagrams.

I guess that's a marker of a good film?

Or perhaps just living with a theoretical physicist. 😁

Next weekend: smashing the patriarchy with Barbie? 💪

'Oppenheimer' director Christopher Nolan to be given knighthood (www.reuters.com)

British-American filmmaker Christopher Nolan, fresh from his Oscar victory for historical drama "Oppenheimer", will receive a knighthood from Britain for services to film. His wife and film producer Emma Thomas will receive a damehood, the female equivalent of a knighthood, the British government said on Thursday in a list of...

My last word on the film is a quote from Leo Szilard (a fleeting presence in the film, but a key historical figure who wrote the “Einstein letter” re-enacted after the war in the photo below).

Speaking in Cincinnati in January 1947 Szilard said:

“Mass murderers have always commanded the attention of the public, and atomic scientists are no exception to the rule”

With 13 Oscar nominations, all signs point to as the star of the 96th . But a historian – whose research has revolved around the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing – explains why they are disappointed by the award-winning film.

“Yet again, the dominant narrative of the bombs chugs along,” writes Naoko Wake of Michigan State University. And the victims aren’t shown.
