Solstice greeting from a bunch of Welsh sheep sheltering under an ancient hawthorn by a Neolithic chambered tomb. Perfectly normal (and my second Daily #Wales, since the first random scroll pic was so gloomy). #archaeology#cymru#prehistory
Callanish 3 stone circle, just 2 fields from Callanish 2. Lots more stones here than Callanish 2 that I posted last week. Again, not far from Callanish 1 the main site that is visible from these. #StandingStoneSunday#PreHistory#Callanish#Scotland
In the 7th century CE, Asuka-mura village was the capital of #Japan. The area around it contains many strange #stone#monuments most of which cannot be seen anywhere else. Some scholars suspect the sculptured figures as part of pan-Pacific style including Palindo in Sulawesi island and the Moai on Easter island. Aska has written a guide to the many sites included on our pages: https://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146414724#prehistory#prehistoric#megalithic
Capel Garmon Burial Chamber, a well preserved Neollithic chamber near Betws Y Coed North Wales. " A 16ft/5mt passageway leads to a triple burial chamber with a large capstone over the western compartment. Surrounding the structure is a ring of stones marking the outline of an early 100ft/30mt earthen mound which originally covered it". #TombTuesday#PreHistory#Neolithic
Machrie Moor 2 standing stones, the famous ones from Arran. The height of the 3 remining stones range from 3.7 meters to 4.9 meters, the original stone circle had a diameter of 13.7 meters. There were probably 8 tall sandstone slabs, only these 3 remain. Iconic, click for full size. #StandingStoneSunday#PreHistory#Arran#Scotland
Dunchraigaig cairn in Kilmartin Glen Scotland. Bronze age about 4000 -5000 years old. “Excavations in the 1800s found remains of up to 10 people in one cist. Dug directly into the ground and capped with a massive 3.9m stone”. In 2021 it was revealed that Scotland’s earliest animal carvings had been discovered inside the cairn, of two male red deer’s. #TombTuesday#BronzeAge#PreHistory#cairn

If modern human intelligence evolved 60,000 years ago, why did civilization not develop until 10,000 BC? This question lies at the heart of the sapient paradox, one of the great mysteries of human existence. Potential explanations range from a reconsideration of prehistory to the power of collective learning to early humans getting stuck in "gossip traps."
