Backwashing the pool filter this morning, and having recently watched Dune, can't help but wonder what the first Fremen off-world must have thought when they encountered people throwing away gallons of water just to clean some crud off their sand...

(Other than, y'know, crysknife to the face.)

I have finished reading Chapterhouse Dune. My fools errand is finished. It’s not good, and of course ends with loose ends.

I think my personal recommendation is reading the first two books. Although just one or even zero are solid choices. Three is alright, except it’s a trap if it makes you curious and want to read more.

I’m tempted to revisit Heinlein who I haven’t read in at least twenty years, but I’m also afraid he’ll be disappointing.

Watched Dune this evening. Very impressive, as I've come to expect from Villeneuve...

One of the weird premises of Dune is the notion of scientific secrets. It’s really hard to keep scientific secrets. Once you know something is possible, if you have the resources of numerous planets for centuries, you can absolutely recreate anything ever invented.

Usually the limiting factor is resources.

Okay, now that I think about it’s one of the least weird assumptions. Just a dumb one.

The very first piece of my writing that was ever published was an entry in the Dune Encyclopedia, some 40-odd years ago. So of course I have to watch the Dune films. I didn't get out to see Dune 2 in a theatre, so I paid the big bucks today and streamed it. I have my quibbles with they way it's being done, but on the whole I've liked both films. We'll see about Dune 3.

I have finished Heretics of Dune

I don’t really know what to make of it. On the one hand, it’s back to political maneuvering and is at least readable. But it’s still mostly about eugenics. And controlling people through sex.

I feel like you can skip God and enjoy this one, but you are still better off ending at either 1, 2, or at most 3.

Just watching the 2 and don't recall Lady Jessica being quite so militantly in favor of .

Am I being insufficiently critical towards her?

It was interesting the way fanatical were more in the south, with Chani being an atheist northerner.

Just finished Dune Messiah after rereading Dune. It felt like a pretty darn weird book to me, not sure if I should continue the series.

Thoughts?

I have finished reading God Emperor of Dune. It ended exactly as it must, but I’m still not certain what to think of it. So far it’s my least favorite book, mostly because of the homophobia.

My recommendation is to probably stop at book 2 or 3.

But I shall forge ahead anyway.

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

into 2004. I always prioritised palaeo-work, but I was never going to pass on an opportunity to illustrate 5 DUNE covers, by Frank Herbert. Crazy thing was, the publisher accepted & published my colour draft drawings & paid me in full anyway!

FINALLYYYYYY (with this new job, I cut my commute in half and therefore my reading time).

I cannot BELIEVE how much they cut out of the films… and not even frivolous things, but really important, plot-driving parts! 😱 If I had read this first before watching, I think I would have been pissed…

I see that Herbert believes in traditional marriage, between a woman and an immortal sandworm hybrid.
