I think at this point it's worth thinking about why we need text chats and voice/video calls integrated with each other like what #XMPP (try to), #Matrix, and #Discord do
Why not just go back to #IRC or something like #AIM for text, and something like #Skype for calls like the old days :sagume_think:
File exchange in #XMPP nowadays is either HTTP upload (covered by #OMEMO) or #jingle file transfer, which should be e2e encrypted, too, but I'm not sure about it.
The more I use #Matrix the more I yearn for #xmpp.
The amount of resources a Matrix home server consumes is pretty insane too.
I also have this annoying bug / behavior with any Matrix client (#Element iOS and desktop, #fluffychat ) where the chat view randomly jumps around while you’re reading a backlog. It kinda sucks.
Mildly related: I will use Matrix (i.e. :matrix.org) soon using my #Jabber client, thanks to #slidge#matridge, a personal gateway from #XMPP to Matrix. I'm still in test mode, but I'm optimistic that #Dino and #Gajim will replace nheko on my desktop soon.
"#Jabber is a new project I recently started to create a complete #opensource platform for #InstantMessaging with transparent #communication to other IM systems (#ICQ, #AIM, etc). Most of the initial design and protocol work is done, as well as a working server and a few test clients."
Have you convinced a full normie to #XMPP? How has it gone? Were there any problems or need of being help desk? Why is "ok" Monal the best client for iOS?
Sure, family, friends... The easiest onboarding was #Quicksy.im (Android only) by @daniel.
A typical "full normie" forgets their password and at some point (new device or whatever) they need it. Quicksy solves this by using the phone number as id and SMS password reset.
A #Monal fork with the same functionality would be awesome.
I wanted to setup secure group messaging solution (+calls and video calls) between members of my family but this turned out to be non trivial because so many "good" solutions these days expect a smartphone and (valid) phone number. However… my youngest does not have a smartphone.
After a few dead ends I managed to setup Signal for them anyway, despite this.
Really though, it should not be this hard! Why are all these services tied to phones and phone numbers anyway!?
