I've used #MacOS for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).
I've installed #Linux on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.
But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…
Why is it so hard to have my Mac mini consistently appear on Finder via #ZeroConf#Bonjour? Half the time the computer isn’t visible, and there’s no amount of flushcache or killing mDNSResponder or Finder that brings it back. I wait many minutes with my Finder open and…it spontaneously comes back? WTF?
i have been asked to explain #Linux: it's a fork of #Google#Android intended for virtualized use on #Apple#macOS and #Microsoft#Windows desktops, although lately it's seen some uptake in datacenter applications
I have added a shortcut for refreshing packages. Next step, I'll see if I can add a separate button to Cork itself for only refreshing packages without updating them!
(also, does anyone know why Shortcuts is showing the key for each LocalizedStringResource instead of the actual string? 🤔 see pic #2 for code)
I noticed my disk storage went drastically low and I started to check system, then I realized something ( #macos update???) enabled iCloud Photos synchronization to my Mac (that can take all the storage it get, and for that very reason I didn't enable it on my mac)
To recap what I got working today in Cork (but I'm not promising that it's gonna be in the next release!):
Added three Shortcuts: Get installed Formulae, Casks or all Packages
"Get installed Formulae" allows you go only limit it to only manually installed packages. For some reason, doing this in the "Get installed Packages" crashes it even though it's the same system
there really aren't that many good looking #mastodon desktop clients sadly (outside of #macos but then they all look more or less the same because of #swiftui, not to say they don't look great)
I'm once again reminded why I stopped engaging with the GitHub community.
Me: "I propose idea A"
Maintainer: "Idea A is not acceptable. It will be B"
Me: "I accept it can't be idea A and idea B is closer to what we need, but I think alternative C or D would satisfy both our requirements. B is not a good idea. Could you at least consider it, or give me reasons why idea C or D are still not acceptable?"
Main.: "I'm the maintainer. It will be B. If you don't agree, don't contribute" (PR rejected)
The Affinity suite under #Bottles / Wine is still plagued with issues, unfortunately, so it’s dual-boot for me.
Software development isn’t cheap, and I imagine that there just aren’t enough Linux users to justify the expense of a port. I would gladly pay for a #Linux version, but that’s just me.
