Music recommendations

Am exchanging two songs a day with my 15 yr old daughter.

I am sending pre 2000 songs of various styles. Show her what it was like before autotune and drone rap and pop songs all sounding the same. Giving her a bit of an education.

While she is sending me current stuff she likes.

While I have been compiling songs lists, I noticed very few were females. Also what apealed to me growing up might not appeal to her. Then there are probably heaps of great songs from growing up in Australia, that I have forgotten all about.

So what great songs would you suggest?

List of songs so far will be added to the thread.

Life On Mars? b/w Life On Mars? (live) by David Bowie (1973)

40th Anniversary edition picture disc

It’s picture disc time! It’s also Bowie Time. Always the right time for something by him.

The picture on Side A is of course a still from the fabulous Life On Mars? video. The pic on Side B is of David performing live. The live version of the track was recorded in Boston in 1972.

A black and white photo of David Bowie in concert, holding a guitar, standing in front of a microphone and looking into the distance. There is a sticker with text describing Side A as being

glad to have this in place, but we uh, did not apparently put the back in alphabetical order. fixing that is going to be a pain.

Denver Post: "Denver's June rainfall total broke a record set in 1882. And I love this quote from that story: "It's an almost ridiculous amount of rain." That's what National Weather Service meteorologist David Barjenbruch said about Denver's May-June rain total of 11.63 inches, which is nearly what the city sees in a year, on average."

If I could afford it I would only collect OG records, and while still mostly gravitate toward them, the reissues are done so well they are hard to pass up as gap fillers. Love this one. What a lineup and session. @vinylrecords

Bryan Hoffa is a library audio preservation specialist with the Library of Congress. In this video he shows us how 78rpm records are cleaned and digitized for the LOC. He also shares some interesting variables about the inconsistencies of 78s.

Apparently you can clean 78s with WD-40. I'd not tried it before, but I have one record that was so dirty it just wouldn't play - dirt puts more drag on the needle, and the spring motor isn't as powerful as an electric one, so it just ground to a halt after two or three rotations. My normal cleaning method of soapy water and a toothbrush didn't help, so I tried the WD-40... and sure enough, it plays perfectly now!

Last June night was one of the coldest in recent decades in northern and eastern Germany. Some records for the lowest temperature were even broken near the ground.

The cause was a fresh inflow of very dry polar air, which was able to cool down optimally in clear and windless conditions. The dry soils also played a role.

It's absolutely beat to hell, but when I find an original copy (JP's old copy, according to the cover) of a classic like Paranoid at Goodwill for less than $3, I can't just leave it there. It's too damn beautiful and badass. 🤘

I'm not a huge vinyl/LP collector anymore (I love them, but I had hundreds & moving them around is rough-- they're big & heavy!)

I probably still have ~10.

Yesterday, wifey alerted me to some low-priced ones-- I ordered these two, and I'm PSYCHED to get them.

I love Coltrane SO much-- and that blue vinyl is so beautiful! 😍

Jimi is my favorite guitarist ever-- I hear him in so much of my favorite music, too.

Axis: Bold as Love has my favorite Hendrix song on it ("You Got Me Floatin'"). And that cover art is so epic, too! 🤯

Had a bunch of records arrive this week from HHV, one of my favourites is the new release from Durand Jones. Beautiful stories set to beautiful music.
