Apple Music has such a poor recommendation system, even though apps collect loads of identifiable data about me.

Apple knows what music I like, which podcasts I watch, which books I read, and how I exercise. What are they doing with all this identifiable data?

In contrast, I use a throwaway account to sign in with , I pay with gift cards. They don't know who I am. I listen to a couple of tracks, skip a few, and then almost all the recommendations that follow match my taste. 🤯

A couple of weeks ago, I found a flow in the iOS app which played samples of newly released songs by artists I like, and invited me to either like the song, opt to listen to the whole thing, or move onto the next. As terrible as this sounds, I actually quite liked it. But because Spotify is now a complete mess of things I don't care about, I've never been able to find it again, even after swiping past the hundreds of things on the Home tab.

The idea of any democratic government essentially an app or platform for political reasons is deeply worrying $ hypocritical

Yet, I strongly freel something has to be done about TikTok, and its potential as a tool in state-led campaigns. But there's a more fundamental problem. Why should TikTok have access to the US, Japanese & European markets when platforms like , , & can't be used in China?

Spotify maakt eindelijk miljoenen winst.

I've dipped into the debate, with a unique proposal. No ban, instead, mandate reciprocity.

Liberal democracies should restrict TikTok and other Chinese apps like and from accessing their digital markets until allows foreign platforms like , , , and equal and fair access to the Chinese market.

I read a thread on here which said #Napster pays artists (presumably they mean labels) the best, so I downloaded the app to see what it's all about in 2024 because I know it's going to be very different to the Napster I remeber of 2000. :crystal_ball_fb:

And it seems on the surface like a competent streaming app. :face_smile_fb: There's not that much difference between #Spotify / #Tidal / #Deezer / etc. these days to be honest.

But I think I'm sticking with #AppleMusic. :face_sunglasses_fb:

"Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department was the first album in Spotify history to have over 300M streams in a single day.”

Remarkable.

What I love about her success is the stories that emerge. Not of selfishness and greed. But of incredible kindness, standing up for what's right, and being a role model.

When Spotify entered the podcast world, audio producer Alex Sujong Laughlin was wary — and with good reason, since back when she was a social media editor working at The Washington Post, she saw the devastating effect some private tech companies have had on media and journalism. She's sad to be proved right. "Spotify — along with many other companies — wants to create a closed ecosystem for the creation, distribution, and consumption of podcasts, bypassing RSS technology altogether because that would allow them to harvest more listener data to leverage with advertisers," she writes in this story for Defector. Luckily, she says it's not too late to take back our feeds. "You don’t have to understand the technology of RSS to choose to listen to your podcasts on an open app. You can just choose to do it." [Story may be paywalled]
