    How to Leave X

    Some of the best tips I've seen for transitioning to Mastodon.

    Don't delete your X account; instead go Mastodon-first, meaning:

    1. Open Mastodon before X
    2. Post new content to Mastodon before X
    3. Engage replies on Mastodon before X
    4. Keep using X but as a lurker; reply less, follow less.
    5. Post teasers on X ("My thoughts on ABC are posted on Mastodon. Username in bio.")
    6. Occasionally post on X that you're now on Mastodon, otherwise your absence is less noticed.

    @BramMeehan@ohai.social avatar

    @davidslifka Something that helped me, somewhere between 0 and 2, was to just watch.

    Have an avatar, something in the bio, maybe that pinned intro. But just follow and observe interactions, customs, customs being broken, see what people are saying about their instances. Maybe you switch instances before it becomes a big deal.

    You’ve got time, take a week or two to see how it all works before diving in.

    "The Cognitive Style of Subtitles"

    Subtitles are becoming much more common these days -- on TV, in films, on livestreamed video conferencing, and in social media

    It's damn interesting

    Research finds that subtitling has really good effects on comprehension and recall

    My essay on it: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-cognitive-style-of-subtitles-f1e9d9f27dd0

    @clive Last one hits on two real sticking points, why I will wait for Netlflix to dub:

    1. Need control over how big the type appears — which is generally just not big enough (shout out Paris Police 1900). TBF, my TV size would probably embarrass most Americans, but it should really be customizable

    2. Timing. Pace out that dialogue. If I can read to the end and know how a conversation goes before the characters, it’s just a bad experience.

    Remember to conduct yourself internally assuming you will have a public audience. Because someday you might.
    Was recently discussing a legal retention requirement in company chat. Made sure to be completely forthright and formal about responsibilities. Can’t play with that stuff.

    I Thought It Was About Time For Another Movie Question!

    What is a movie that is great, but you only need to watch it once?

    BramMeehan,
    @BramMeehan@ohai.social avatar

    @Holberg @RickiTarr Oh, wow, that’s so right. I was dragged to this as a teenager… “How long? In Japanese? And black-and-white?” and the movie started and I gasped and then it was intermission and the whole thing just swept me up.

    And I’m good with not doing that again.

    The artist responsible for the box art here fuelled my imagination though my early teens. Larry Elmore created many of the images in the materials on which we based our fantasy role-playing games. He also created a comic strip for Dragon magazine called Snarf Quest. Have you heard of it?

    What's in the DNA of tech journalists that makes it so hard for them to use Mastodon? I've never seen any other group run head first into so many pitfalls. It's not hard, create an account, follow as many people as possible, interact. If you want the deluxe experience ask around about the best third party app and install it.

    BramMeehan,
    @BramMeehan@ohai.social avatar

    @mike

    The tech is the scapegoat.

    They just want their Twitter, the way they used it and remember it.

    Not that the onboarding and experience can't improve (and is and will) — it's made out to be the issue, but it's not.

    The issue is it's Not Twitter.

    Me (GenX) just asked by a Boomer "Why do you hate the suburbs so much?"

    "The suburbs in the late 70s and 80s did things to the adolescent mind. Things you can't come back from. It was the grid formatted and freshly-mowed-lawn scented actualized heat death of culture neatly stored in parent's locked liquor cabinets. It's airless existence mocking all karmic civilizational laws — superpositionally located as both the zenith and nadir of the 20th century American imperial project."

    For a long while, it seemed like the "paperless office" would never arrive

    Throughout the 80s and 90s, as companies adopted computers, the amount of office paper exploded

    Why? Because people were communicating more and more -- but wanted paper copies of those reports, emails, memos

    Paper was superior to screens in nearly every way

    But!

    That may finally have changed

    @clive In the year of our lord two thousand two hundred twenty-three, I have again submitted a PDF to a client — all a decade+ younger than me — requesting Acrobat’s commenting tools for revisions. Again, I have received a scan of hand-annotated pages.

    I appreciate proofreading on hard copy. Especially since the final will be a print product. And getting proper edits with proper marks (which… they kind of mostly got).

    We assume people know how to use the tools they have.
