Belgium refused to cut funding for UNRWA, so Israel just bombed their office building in Gaza.

Breck,

@pluralistic Well, it is difficult to confront the fact that you've paid extra for a thing and perhaps not gotten your money's worth. I think that the temptation to delude yourself into believing that you paid extra because 1) you're a more discerning consumer who can appreciate the superiority of the product you bought and 2) you're not a plebe who can't afford the superior product, is very strong.

Here’s what we are reading today:

Putin will run for re-election in 2024. If successful his term would end in 2030.

Holding office for longer than any leader since Stalin, Putin could remain leader until 2036 due to constitutional changes made in 2021.

https://www.politico.eu/article/shocker-vladimir-putin-running-for-president-again-russia/

Breck,

@timkmak I dunno. I believe President Zelensky is a great man. He seems very courageous and moral. I believe he is the right man to lead Ukraine through this time.
But, I worry that postponing the election is the wrong choice. The US held elections through world war II. The US held elections during the civil war. Granted the power imbalance wasn't as lopsided as in Russia v Ukraine. But I worry that putting democracy on hold is wrong.

The New Speaker, Mike Johnson, is working hard for the wealthy donor class already. He wants to condition aid to Israel on slashing the same amount from the IRS budget—because the Uber wealthy don’t like how that agency is now far better at collecting taxes they owe. Don’t play political games with aid packages, rookie.

Breck,

@georgetakei So, on the one hand he wants a clean bill for the Israel aid package, unencumbered by Ukraine aid. But on the other hand, he wants something COMPLETELY unrelated stapled to the side of the Israel aid bill. Can they hear themselves?

Breck,

@cyberlyra So, I believe I've seen estimates that if the antarctic ice and the greenland ice all melt and flow into the ocean then the world will see sea level rise of as much as 50 meters. The referenced tool maxes out at 10 meters. Is the tool excessively conservative? Is the 50 meter estimate just completely unrealistic? Is my memory failing me?

Breck,

@cyberlyra Did a little googling and a little arithmetic. Antarctica has about 6 milion cubic miles of ice stacked on it. The surface area of the earth is a little under 200 million square miles. Just about 70 percent of that is ocean. So just a bit under 140 million square miles into 6 million cubic miles and we get about 4 hundredths of a mile of extra water depth in the ocean.Or just about 211 feet. Don't know why the calculator maxes out at 10 meters.

Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks the fact that the Earth spins at 1,000 miles an hour and that “we have no idea we’re even moving” means that God must be real. Okay… well, Marjorie’s big mouth moves at 1,000 miles an hour, and I have no idea what she’s even saying, so Satan must be real, too.

Just try to find more than 5 seconds of mention of Sidney Powell’s plea deal anywhere but CNN and MSNBC. And some wonder why MAGAs only get their information from FoxNews? No one else is publishing any for them. It’s insane and disgusting that we tolerate it. And we don’t even talk about that. Which is even more disgusting.

Breck,

@shoq Not sure what you're trying to say, but I see a couple stories about it on WaPo. Reuters covers it. BBC covers it. NYTimes covers it.
I'll grant that it's disappointing that SO MUCH attention is being given to Gym Jordan's inability to count votes. But to be honest I kinda see Powell's guilty plea as about as surprising as a domino falling when the domino next to it is pushed into it.

Breck,

@shoq Ah. I don't watch TV news, so that explains the disconnect.

Excellent piece on the British roots of the conflict in and the impact of colonial “divide and rule” strategies here and elsewhere:

“In British India, they pushed the Hindu-Muslim divide, sometimes favoring one population, sometimes the other. In Cyprus, they pitted the Greeks against the Turks. In Sri Lanka, it was the Tamils against the Sinhalese. In Ireland, it was the Catholics against the Protestants. The list goes on.“

The American College of Emergency Physicians has withdrawn its approval of a 2009 paper on “excited delirium,” a document that describes a “potentially life-threatening” condition that results in unusual strength, pain tolerance and bizarre behavior. Critics say police have used the paper to justify excessive force in cases where a suspect dies in custody, and the American Medical Association has rejected it as a diagnosis.

I see a lot of articles along these lines. “The Kamala Harris Question.” “The Challenge for Kamala Harris.” And so on. I just don’t remember similar articles about other VPs. “The Dan Quayle Question.” “The Challenge for VP Biden.” Vice Presidents are there to support the president and largely don’t have much else official to do. But the media and the public are holding Harris to a higher standard. Hmmm. I wonder why?

Breck,

@georgetakei Well, in fairness, there were a LOT of jokes about Dan Quayle. I seem to remember a lot of articles about his report on the state of the space program. Maybe I'm misremembering, but I seem to remember a general consensus that he was selected as GHW Bush's running mate because he was one of the few politicians that wouldn't make Bush look like a lightweight.

The Israeli government has cut off food, water, and fuel to 2 million people inside Gaza as part of its campaign to stamp out Hamas terrorism. Collective punishment is not only contrary to international law, it is inhumane and illogical. It is what my community once endured in World War II, all because of the actions of others who happened to share our ethnicity. Have we learned nothing? How will this possibly help deescalate the violence rather than radicalize many more? It is madness.

Breck,

@maffia @georgetakei Mr. Takei never said he wasn't "angry with Hamas." He has described the attack as an a atrocity and depraved. I don't understand why you'd try to mischaracterize his position.

Breck,

@maffia @georgetakei Uh, yes? What's your point?

@maffia @georgetakei Agree to disagree. Their actions (and the actions of the US Government) over the last several decades aren't making things better. Maybe there's another way.
