Wow. A microbiology lab at Texas A&M accepted purchased raw milk samples from NPR for H5N1 testing, then contacted the milk producers to seek permission. When the producers said, "don't test our milk," the lab not only declined to carry out the tests but also refused to send the samples on to another lab.

I like how A&M warm over farm “families’” survival when people are being killed. What cult of human sacrifice do they worship in?

In the battle for the youth vote we now seem to have some clear blue water between the parties;

Labour is (at least at the moment) offering to lower the voting age to 16 - perhaps hoping that 18 year olds will see this as a positive move for their younger siblings?

Meanwhile the Tories are offering mandatory 'national service' at 18 to build character & experience....

Hmmm... while actually, I'm not sure the Tories idea is nuts, I can't see many 18 year olds going for it.

I’ve found appeal to the concept on a number of grounds.

An universal (no exception and not necessarily military) national service that mixed people from all walks of life for a period would have a subtle effect on general attitudes.

On a population:
people know what other walks of like are like from direct experience
It’s a practical experience of working together
useful things are done

Military service

all walks are confronted they may be called to war

An inflationary spiral based on expectations. It is a very different one from a deflationary one.

In the case of supply chain disruption (think floods and drought) it's a supply shock and at best businesses have to scramble to adapt (invest etc) to get around the problem. But hammering COL demand is perverse.

In all cases, messing around with interest rates is largely an exercise in futility.

I was just thinking a bit about taxes and fair shares and one of Jesus' parables popped into my head. See, the church has a flat tax system, or at least, the evangelical church does. Each member of the church is supposed to voluntarily give 10% of their income, which the church is very adamant that God will return to you with interest. I remember hearing stories from clearly well-off Sunday-school teachers telling of how they "used to struggle a lot financially" but would still find ways to make it fit in their budget, and now they were comfortable. This was a story told to children, mind you, and with adult retrospect I can think of some additional context I'd like to ask for in that story.

I am familiar but not well read of the Bible. Jesus advocated for radical compassion. One could suggest that he built from the notion of welcoming the stranger, a custom endemic to the ME. The Greeks embodied it as well. Travelers were welcomed, fed and sheltered, and only then asked their business. Ultimately humanity’s super power is in reciprocity. All of the above examples of its expression.

JC also said its not our job to cull weeds from wheat but care for all.

@scott There’s a pastor on YT, Rev Ed Trevors, an Anglican priest who is useful to sample. He’s a version of Christianity I like to remind myself of, because the other kind has been given a megaphone.

You might listen a bit to some of his posts because he definitely works the compassion angle. Some posts are specifically religious in ways I care little about, but most of them talk about behavior towards others.

This is something I am deeply worried about too; throughout but again this morning, with Israel’s horrendous bombing of a refugee camp just days after ICC put out a warrant against Netanyahu, and again, so far, NOTHING from Biden and co:

that the liberal world order so obviously means nothing, is a sham; that “Might is Right” - always but now so completely clearly so. As Nesrine Malik says, this will have wider repercussions.

Deficits DO matter, just not the way textbook economics says.

Because federal debt, the credit it has created, is the money in our bank accounts.

Deficits and debt does matter.

Please disabuse conservatives that MMT doesn't care about deficits.
