As a woman within the incredibly male dominated world of drystone walling, I have unfortunately experienced a lot of negative things that have really affected my mental health.

After taking a lot of time out, this week was a turning point. Working in beautiful rural Scotland & building this garden feature, I've been so enjoying drystone again. Working away happily in the sun, I realised that I can love and be involved in the craft without loving and being involved in the community.

@Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

@kristiedegaris this really angers me. It was something I experienced 45yrs ago (I’m auld) as the sole female in what was then a very male dominated profession. I eventually went out on my own and had a very sucessful career, but still think of these dinosaurs and misogynistic eejits and wonder how many young women gave up. Keep your head up!

Deglassco, (edited ) to history

In WW2, the movement of millions of American troops to Britain, known as the “friendly invasion,” brought to light stark differences concerning racial segregation. Many Britons struggled to understand or accept the institutionalized discrimination that Black soldiers faced in White America, leading to tensions between the two allied nations on the matter of civil rights.

This is an excellent explainer about El Niño, about how our ocean circulations work and how that affects nearly everything.

It's not a quick read, though. Rather, it's in-depth and includes some fairly heavy science. But I expect that a lot of my followers would dig something like this.

@magdelenehall it’s crazy how prices are rising. I live a cold semi rural area of Scotland and every autumn I stock up on lentils, barley etc to add to soup which we eat daily to keep warm. The costs have almost doubled in the last year. Sure it’s not the costliest of food and I can afford, but if you’ve no or little money it is a huge deal. I worry for those who are already struggling

Lauren James: England star "lost her emotions" for red card against Nigeria, says England manager Sarina Wiegman:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66427469

Disappointed as I feel her conduct marred the win somewhat as well as her own legacy in this tournament, as she's been so good up until the Nigeria game.

That said, it's easy to forget that she's just 21 years old. Definitely something she'll reflect and learn from, hopefully.

    I've figured it out! 💡

    The best way to stop carbon from accumulating in the atmosphere is to: 1) stop drilling for oil, 2) stop fracking for gas, 3) stop digging for coal, and 4) stop burning fossil fuels.

    It's really not a complicated formula.

    @dejavrai @simon_brooke @wackJackle @RichardJMurphy I have to agree. Demographics will determine Scotland (and NI) future. The reality is as the older generation, the only age group predominantly pro union, meet their maker they are being being replaced by our youth who are predominantly against the union. Apropos of nothing, one observation I’ve heard people who used to be involved in labour negotiations here in Iceland is “people with American brain worms don’t know how to negotiate with unions”

    (Paraphrasing, since the original is always in Icelandic.)

    This is noticable in that you can guess with reasonable certainty, which company is run by an executive trained in the US just by how badly they are handling union contract negotiations

    Lassielmr,
    @Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

    @simeon @TeamMidwest @baldur think most of us across Europe have held the same thought. I used to work in the USA (I’m Scottish) and realised it really is a dog eat dog society alien to most of us in Europe. I recall being called a communist by colleagues because I believe everyone in society should be given the same health and education opportunities. A healthy educated society is good for the economy and benefits all. Few agreed with me.

    We should all be applauding those striking. Once upon a time, unions were a bulwark against corporate greed.

    Most are regular workers, just trying to make a living and support themselves or their families.

    Striking workers are striking for all of us. Workers are being squeezed to the breaking point in nearly every industry. Everyone deserves a fair contract, no exceptions.

    @TonyStark I’ve no issue with unions, but the current union model is an outdated staple of the industrial era. Just 2 in 10 think Union leaders do “a good job” representing members. Many Union leaders earn more than the average CEO, while they rail against income inequality and greedy corporations.

    @harriettmb @irelandpolitics @ScepticalScot1 they are managed at council level. The lodge screams ‘human rights’ when changes are suggested, but Scot Gov is looking at Gov level to determine if something can be done. The Scottish HQ of the OO sold up and moved out of Glasgow to near Motherwell and they’ve now put that up for sale for only £140k. There’s claims they have no money and membership is fewer than 40k comprising of mainly elderly less advantaged folk.

    Lassielmr,
    @Lassielmr@mastodon.scot avatar

    @ScepticalScot1 @harriettmb @irelandpolitics Scotgov are actually looking at this, but the Scottish OO is in dire straights. Their lack of support in Glasgow was behind them moving out the city to Motherwell, but they are selling up there too. Their support now mainly lies in parts of Lanarkshire and less well off parts of Ayrshire. Most of the marching these days is from very small local lodged and the rest are bussed over from Belfast.

    Scientists are now saying we are “out of time” to keep global heating at under 1.5°C. It’s simply too late. We’ve delayed any action far too long.

    All our talk and meetings and phony “Net Zero” pledges don’t mean anything to an overstressed climate system that is rapidly breaking down.

    You can’t fool Mother Nature.

    The target of keeping long-term global warming within 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) is moving out of reach, climate experts say, with nations failing to set more ambitious goals despite months of record-breaking heat on land and sea.

    “We’ve run out of time because change takes time,” said Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climatologist at Australia’s University of New South Wales.

    As climate envoys from the two biggest greenhouse gas emitters prepare to meet next month, temperatures broke June records in the Chinese capital Beijing, and extreme heat waves have hit the United States.

    Parts of North America were some 10C (18F) above the seasonal average this month, and smoke from forest fires blanketed Canada and the US East Coast in a hazardous haze, with carbon emissions estimated at a record 160 million tons.

    In India, one of the most climate-vulnerable regions, deaths spiked as a result of sustained high temperatures, and extreme heat has been recorded in Spain, Iran, and Vietnam, raising fears that last year’s deadly summer could become routine.

    Countries agreed in Paris in 2015 to try to keep long-term average temperature rises within 1.5C, but there is now a 66% likelihood the annual mean will cross the 1.5C threshold for at least one whole year between now and 2027, the World Meteorological Organization predicted in May.
