Nothing quite angers me like using an app that recommends to me people that I “should” know.

Which means that person probably allowed the app access to their contacts.

Giving an app access to your contacts is like spreading a venereal disease. Now this app knows who I am connected to, and can probably figure out why and how. That’s more information than I wanted to give them.

Don’t give apps access to your contacts. It’s not just your privacy that’s at stake.

This is your reminder not to censor yourself because you're afraid you'll lose followers.

Only the people who stay are worth knowing who you are. Be you. Be as much as yourself as you want to put out there, but be yourself.

We need more sincere people who aren't trying to put on a show to get followers. People just being themselves. Sometimes goofy, sometimes angry, sometimes brilliant, but always true selves.

To me, that's what makes a great social media platform. People being who they are.

It's not about which social media is best.

It's about in who's hands the power of social media exists.

Facebook, Twitter, SkyBlue, TickTock, WeChat, Whatsapp, etc all owned by corporations. You are a product there.

In the Fediverse, you are a user. You are a participant rather then an exchange of goods.

One uses you, the other asks to be used by you.

Can anyone point to a good resource on how to be a better parent to an autistic adult?

I really feel like I'm swimming in circles and I'm not always sure I'm being the advocate and support that she needs me to be.

People act like Gmail came in and afterwards there were no more email providers. Did a lot of people use it? Yes. Did it somehow kill off all off the small email providers? No. Some of them? Sure. All? No.

Why did I switch from Gmail to Proton? Because I stopped trusting Gmail. And felt that I could trust Proton more. Can I still email someone that uses Gmail? Yes. Do I have to support Gmail? No.

The purpose of an open protocol is choice. Otherwise why bother making it open?

Since I've been observing my girlfriend work remote (now only 2 days a week) I've noticed that about 1/4 of her time seems to be convincing her male co-workers that she's right.

And she is. 99% of the time.

But damn if she doesn't have to spend 30 minutes each time convincing them.

Dear new people to Mastodon...

You may or may not have noticed that when you upload a pic that there's an option to add alt text to the picture so that people who are visually impaired can know what the pic is.

It only takes a few seconds and helps to add to the richness and inclusiveness that helps make Mastodon the unique place that it is.

I know it's not what you are used to, but once you get in the habit, you'll find it's easy to do, and your followers will appreciate it.

I've said this before and I'll say it again...

I don't care how famous your favorite comedian is. If they complain that they can't write funny jokes anymore because the culture has become too PC, they are in fact a hack.

Being politically correct (or as I like to refer to it, "not being a dick".) doesn't kill comedy. Bad writing does. If you can't write better jokes, don't blame it on the culture. Comedy like any art should reflect the culture.

Maybe I'm a little paranoid but I find it interesting that as Mastodon and rest of the Fediverse becomes more popular, where bridges are trying to be built between big services, that all of a sudden spam attacks are targeting small instances in order to wear down admins and force them to either shut down or close registration.

You might have an old blanket or jacket that you aren't using that may end up saving someones life.

You know that $50 you won in the holiday office party? That can help a few people get some food in their belly.

Helping others doesn't always require a huge sacrifice. Give what little you can. It all adds up to those who need it the most.

I'd like to remind the Fediverse that if you don't like YouTube blocking your ad blocker, that PeerTube exists.

PeerTube not as good you say? The Fediverse is USER driven. That means if you want to attract better videos, you have to give creators a reason to use the service.

There's some great content on PeerTube. You just have to dig deeper.

So when you find it, share it. We showed them that Mastodon is better. Let's show them PeerTube can be as well.

You are going to see a TON of pushback being here. That's not your fault though. You see, we've all become free of centralized services which make you a product rather then a user. So to some, allowing Meta to federate, is like drinking poison and not expecting it to kill you.

A friend who was dealing with an unpromising future where he knew he would need to be taken care of in the not so distant future, once told me that his biggest fear would be when the moment came when the last of his independence would melt away and that he would become a burden to others.

I didn't know how to console him. So I just sat with him and listened.

It amazes me how much, as a culture, that we internalize our own care, and the care of others, as a "burden".

What is wrong with us?
