The Appeal to Heaven flag isn't just tied to Jan 6.

It's a Christian nationalist symbol.

Christian nationalists believe that the law of the land is not the Constitution, but instead the law of God as they interpret it.

Do you see the problem with Alito flying this flag?

Do you see a series of sunken rectangles or 16 circles?

This is The Coffer Illusion.

Our brains are geared toward identifying objects & here, โ€œpixelsโ€ are grouped to form edges & contours, shapes, & objects. The image is inherently ambiguous so there is no โ€œrightโ€ grouping.

Rectangles dominate first for most people - including me, but keep staring & the image may flip to circles.

We moved into a house that had a disused pool, the kind that's a redwood box with a sand bottom and a plastic liner. Liner had been removed at least a year earlier, judging by the weeds. We filled it with dirt (two dump-truck loads!) and used it as a container for our turtles. Added a couple of fruit trees and a patch of grass. It was more useful that way than if it were a pool.

When people show me hostility, they often speak in the first person plural.

It's group think. It's also mob-like to think that a group of citizens can change the pace or outcome of a criminal investigation.

Social media disappointments:

  1. Journalists are still actively participating at exTwitter, thereby actively supporting Musk, who is helping extremists bring down democracy and, by extension, a free press.

  2. Reddit got away with stomping its volunteer moderators and users, and its execs are cashing in on an IPO that in a more just world would have flopped.

  3. Writers I respect decided to stick with Substack despite arrogant, extremist-friendly investors and leadership.

Here comes a thread on light pollution from satellites, with a concrete action that you all can take to help push for regulation of satellites in orbit!

Astronomers have been worried about light pollution from satellites (if you've been following me for more than 24 hours, you've perhaps heard a bit about this). Astronomers spent SO much time and effort begging and pleading with Starlink to make their satellites fainter, with mixed results.

The FCC has no clue about astronomy and what these satellites do to it. They also don't understand Kessler, or the Carrington event. They're used to dealing with telephone and television and radio. They aren't qualified to handle satellites at all.
