In addition to the bazillionty things I said I would do this week, I need to get my astrobiology students to pick their final project topics: they have to evaluate a work of scifi on the plausibility of its aliens using what they learned from my astrobiology course.

I've asked here before, but I'll ask again: what are some scifi works that have really great aliens and/or alien worlds?

Got my first 0.31 tournament win today. I did horribly yesterday but my Demigod Hunter got real lucky finding lots of dex equipment. I think at the end of the game I had the best defensive stats I’ve ever had outside of Gargoyles. 75 EV and 20 shield. Pretty fun time.

@hannu_ikonen @justafrog I always read the alt text because so many times it has been illuminating. But I’ve seen alt text many times that just makes me cringe because it actively misleads.

I wish people would understand that Trump is a symptom of the rot in the Republican Party. Not the cause.

Every congress person who voted against certifying the vote in 2020 is a fascist.

Every person who refused to impeach Trump for 1/6 is a fascist.

Every person making excuses for the 1/6 insurrectionists is a fascist.

Everyone who voted in 2022 for someone who did those things is at least ok with fascism.

The problem runs deep. And it needs to be repudiated.

As the caregiver to my wife who has been disabled since having a virus 10 years ago, I sincerely hope that this doctor gets long COVID, has to medically retire and therefore cannot hurt patients anymore.

    In preparation for the dcss tournament, I'm going to make back stories for all my characters so that I really feel for them when they die. Maybe this will make me try hard.

    I did this when I first started playing the game 20 years ago. It didn't help me then, but I was terrible at the game then. I think it took me 10 years to get a win.

    First up: Sobieck "Spuds" the Tengu Conjurer.

    Spuds loves hot chocolate but hates potatoes. He gave himself the nickname "Choco" but everyone made fun of him for it. They started to call him "Spuds" because people shouldn't give themselves nicknames. Spuds has decided to dive into the dungeon to get ultimate power so that he can punish them. Spuds has heard about a little spell called firestorm that could really ruin some of his "friends" days.

    Spuds has made easy work of the first two levels of the dungeon. Bats, Quokkas, Orks and Jackels are no match for his magic dart. Even Jessica the Apprentice Sorceress couldn't stand against Spud's searing ray.

    He is learning a lot about Conjurations and Spellcasting by murdering this peaceful community of subterranean creatures.

    Oh shit. Spuds just encountered "Sigmund the Dreaded" on lvl3. He has a reputation for killing many adventurers at the beginning of their quest. Spuds has decided to do the smart thing and run away.

    Spuds found a staff of air which might become very useful since he as a bird creature has an affinity for air magics.

    Spuds has successfully made it to D4 (bypassing Sigmund on D3). Time to start identifying scrolls.

    First scroll is teleportation. Going back to D3. Hopefully we don't tele into Sigmund. We didn't get unlucky.

    Apparently we found a staff of fire at some point. So air/fire magic is looking great for Spuds. He also found a sInv ring with rC+ but with Will-. So he will hopefully remember to put it on at the appropriate times but will- is BAD.

    Scroll of revelation. Neat. That is new.

    Spuds got a scroll of magic mapping. D4 unfortunately doesn't have a temple on it. But it does have a alter which Spuds hopes is an alter to Vehemet (the best god for destructive magics).

    Spuds just found out that his species is no longer fast in this version of the game. Spuds' chances of getting revenge have dropped significantly. Also, Spuds found the temple on D6 but there were no gods he wanted to worship there.

    Spuds found an alter of Vehumet on D7. Things are going pretty smoothly for him since we have prism and mystic blast up and running.

    Prism is fun as hell. Just cast and run away with the two turns (used to be three for Tengus :( ) until it blows up.

    He also found a ring of magic power at some point so he can cast all he wants.

    Things are looking up.

    Spuds decided to go handle Sigmund now that he has his starting spell set working. He was able to get one shot of Prism off before Sigmund was aware, and the second Prism finished him off.

    Sigmund apparently fights with a candy cane in this version... or maybe they are testing the christmas special code.

    But it isn't like Biden's admin is doing a good job at the border right now. We currently have men, women and children spending days out in the cold desert without shelter in "your not detained but if you leave you won't be eligible for asylum" detention. The only thing keeping the people alive is volunteers because border patrol is made up of a bunch of sociopaths.

    It’s a bit nuts that the hospital doesn’t require masking at all. So me and my wife, who is completely disabled, were exposed to tons of unmasked randos just to get some bloodwork done.

    We’d be so fucked if either of us got Covid but no one gives a damn. I mean, if you work in medicine or run a medical facility shouldn’t you do the bare minimum?
