I'm sorry Slack, you're doing fucking WHAT with user DMs, messages, files, etc? I'm positive I'm not reading this correctly.

moreover, now we know who has access to it.

when i started at twitter in 2011 one of the first trainings i attended was the security one, which said, outright "you have a target painted on your back now, you will have to be vigilant".

seemed like pretty sound advice at the time, 12 years ago

dan harmons comments on how hollywood does this to people are important because, and i cant stress this enough:

COMPUTER SECURITY, DEV, AND ENGINEERING JOBS DO EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

we're not alone.
so, pay attention.

it is absolutely wild that i still have to explain that two letter TLDs exist and email addresses that end with two letters and not three are "yes, actually totally valid email addresses"

so with facebook and instagram down, it makes me wonder - was it bgp and dns again? are they locked out of datacenter cages again because their badge readers rely on externally available dns?

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @joy oh dude.
that shit was A RIDE

https://www.techtarget.com/searchnetworking/feature/3-lessons-from-the-2021-Facebook-outage-for-network-pros

someone fucked up a bgp entry, which took their AS offline, and because all their badge readers phone home over IP, and use a name, that name became inaccessible, so they couldnt get into buildings, and allegedly they had to use an angle grinder to cut into a datacenter cage, to get at the machine they had to access in order to fix the bgp error.

insane comedy of errors.
