Writer, programmer, sometime-philosopher, parent and lover. Cyclist, hiker, canoer, camper, yoga disciple and Tai Chi enthusiast. Compulsive fixer/builder/maker; my collection of repair tools is prodigious. I almost certainly have undiagnosed #ADHD (inattentive presentation) as well as a few trademark #autistic traits, but folks nevertheless seem to find me friendly and approachable, and I can be fun at parties once you manage to convince me to go.

Ooooh should Pinball Dad stick his toe in the Linux Discourse

I've been on it since 2010, I guess I should maybe?

How about I stick my whole entire foot in, maybe if I poison it with my footstink then it'll die down a bit

ZippyWonderdust,
@ZippyWonderdust@mastodon.social avatar

@lopta @ifixcoinops Oy! I like GNOME. Sure it’s a bit shit sometimes, but it’s a comfortable predictable crappiness that I’ve come to know and love! Besides, my work flow mainly consists of “start app; maximize; work in app” which GNOME can handle just fine.

I can tell when I need to lower the volume of something I'm listening to when I feel a kind of tightening in my ear muscles, and/or ringing in my ears, or a slight feeling of stress coming in from my environment.

I also just try to remember to always proactively lower the volume a couple ticks from what i first set it at, to prevent all those sensations.

What are the signs for you that things are a little too loud?

@actuallyautistic @dyani Wow! You just perfectly described how I react to loud sounds, such as having the car stereo too high. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one.

First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell died in 1970. He was one of the early 20th century's most prominent logicians and a founder of analytic philosophy, along with his predecessor Gottlob Frege, his friend and colleague G. E. Moore, and his student and protégé Ludwig Wittgenstein. Together with his former teacher A. N. Whitehead, Russell wrote Principia Mathematica. via @wikipedia

I hope you turn it off when you leave the room!

"Last week, The Ocean Cleanup organization that has been tackling the Great Pacific Garbage Patch deployed their System 03 for the first time—nearly three times larger than the previous technology and capable of cleaning the area of a football field every five seconds.

This follows testing of their two smaller systems which succeeded in extracted over 275 tons of plastic from the Garbage Patch since 2021.

The arrival of System 03 marks a huge leap forward for the Dutch CEO Boyan Slat and his team, and their mission of ridding the oceans of at least 90% of the plastic trash by 2040.

System 03 consists of a floating barrier approximately 1.4 miles (2.2 km) long, which is towed between two slow-moving vessels. This barrier suspends a screen extending 13 feet (4 meters) below the surface of the water, where most floating plastic is encountered."

ZippyWonderdust,
@ZippyWonderdust@mastodon.social avatar

@I_Like_Books @NatureMC The garbage patch is estimated to cover 1.6 million square km. If you assume this cleanup rig operates 24x7x365 at a trawling speed of 10kph, then it will take just over 3000 days to cover the entire patch once — that’s a little over 8 years! Realistically assume double or triple that time estimate as I’m pretty sure it won’t be able to operate continuously due to factors including weather, engineering, and finance.

1/2

ZippyWonderdust,
@ZippyWonderdust@mastodon.social avatar

@I_Like_Books @NatureMC This does imply that if someone built a fleet of 30 of these rigs then they could realistically expect to cover the entirety of the patch every year.

I leave the question of where to dump all of the reclaimed garbage as an exercise for the reader, but a very angry voice inside me keeps saying “airdrop it on Jeff Bezos’ estate”!

breadandcircuses, to climate

Here's part of the introduction to an article describing "Climate 'solutions' that don’t help"...

Many shiny new 'green' ideas do more to preserve fossil fuels than to replace them.

The world continues to face a major obstacle to addressing the climate crisis: deliberate distraction with a proliferation of new whiz-bang technologies and ideas.

Some are well-intentioned, some are strategic, some delusional, but most are outright greenwashing to justify the continued use of fossil fuels and to distract from the inevitable move to less expensive renewable energy.

All the items on their list --

🔴 The mother of all distractions: Carbon Capture and Storage

🔴 Deceptively distracting: Dirty hydrogen branded as “clean” by its proponents

🔴 Net nothing: 2050 Net Zero targets

🔴 BS: Chevron’s “renewable” cow dung

🔴 Silly: Renewable race fuel

🔴 Embarrassing: Exxon’s Ill-fated green algae gas

🔴 Most intense distraction: “Least carbon intensive” oil and gas from Saudi Arabia and the UAE

🔴 Most annoying: A 50 billion tree planting project

🔴 Endlessly distracting: Traditional fission nuclear power

FULL ARTICLE -- https://www.climateandcapitalmedia.com/ten-climate-solutions-that-dont-help/

ZippyWonderdust,
@ZippyWonderdust@mastodon.social avatar

@breadandcircuses I agree with every item on this list except one: nuclear. Since extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, I’d really like someone to justify the claim that nuclear is “endlessly distracting”, when its co2 emissions per megawatt are on par with wind and solar, and storage of spent fuel would be trivial if we’d simply allow it to be reprocessed.

So can someone with knowledge about the industry (I’m looking at you, @Hypx) explain why wind and solar farms don’t use electrolysis to create and store hydrogen during the times when they are generating excess electricity? What is the current barrier to grid-scale hydrogen storage and use? Why don’t we have any hydrogen powered “peaker” plants?
