By the way, I always post here first because people will tell me my errors (without being rude LOL).

I don't hire a proofreader because I don't monetize. I feel like I should get double pay for today's blog post, but 2 x zero = zero 😂

Also I tend to discuss ideas here first because I get so many smart and interesting responses.

I think I've either muted, blocked, or scared away the people who like to yell at me.

I have a playlist on Soundcloud of my own original rock music and I’d love for you to check it out, preferably on some good speakers, up loud. I’m really proud of this, and would love to hear what you think.

If you have “I like music” in your profile, you must listen. It’s the law!! 🫶

Boosts very much appreciated! 🤗

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Guys, it’s happening! My daughter is becoming Mastodon-curious. She asked me if there was a server for D&D. I got to say yes, but also explain that you can follow anyone from any server. I got “ah ah ah, i see.”

I need to remind myself to slowly and gently blow on this ember.

What's the D&D server, I assume more than one?
I've got a kid wanting to play D&D but I don't know anything about getting started. I got the starter game pack as a gift for them , but they haven't started.

This week I wrote seven groups of bullet points on a fairly complex topic, and then I used a language model to help me rapidly turn those into more formal chunks of a memo. I could tell you that it helped me get that task done a lot more quickly than starting with a blank doc, but plenty of people would tell me that it didn't.

bayport,
@bayport@theatl.social avatar

My random guess (hope) is that it is more like the carbon cost of a human/friend driving over (hydrocarbons consumed) to help out and perhaps the carbon cost of feeding said friend, or whatever that person’s carbon cost is. I could be right, or I could be wrong. But I’m with Matt’s take on this one.

There is a weird rich suburb south of Atlanta that has trails everywhere except they're not for bikes, they're for golf carts. I always laughed at this as a stupid rich people thing, but recently I realized that they all take golf carts everywhere (groceries, kids to school, etc.) instead of SUVs and golf carts are electric. I wonder if anyone is using this as a model to trick, I mean, encourage, suburbanites into building bike infrastructure and downsizing / electrifying their transport?

bayport,
@bayport@theatl.social avatar

@sam @dannotdaniel

Initially thought the same about it being elite thing until at work we went down there for a team building thing and rented golf carts for a scavenger hunt around the local landmarks and it was a ton of fun. I did also see a lot of bikes too. This was like 10 years ago.
Up in a northern exurb of Atlanta were I live, there has been increasing golf carts around and allowed on the downtown streets. It’s great except many are gas powered carts.

Hey are you able to see the alt text in the animated gifs. I added some with a simple Easter egg in one but seems like I can’t access the alt text after I posted. I tried both mobile web browser and the ice-cubes app. I think it might be bug after some update but I haven’t checked the bug tracker on GitHub yet. I used to be able to access alt text for animated gifs same as static images

“The Literary Style of Alt-Text”

For years, I didn’t add alt-text to my online images

But I’ve started doing it all the time now — being on Mastodon is what showed me how important it is!

Along the way, I’ve started noticing …

…. what an oddly literary activity it is

Here’s an image I wrote alt-text for when I blogged a few weeks ago, below

My essay on alt-texting: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-literary-style-of-alt-text-9f1595cd8f0c

A free “friend” link in case you don’t subscribe to Medium: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-literary-style-of-alt-text-9f1595cd8f0c?sk=1d9cd685997cb08d8909da687a2d03cf

A screenshot of a story written by the author, describing how he wrote alt-text for the attached photo. I reads: And at first I just wrote a simple description, something like "a cyclist going down the street." Then I added more details, including that the cyclist is in the center of the picture, and behind them are a bus stop and a brightly lit store, and that the cyclist is moving quickly. But as I was writing that last clause - "the cyclist is moving quickly" - I realized something curious about the composition of the photo: The cyclist is crisp, while the background is blurred. That's not an easy effect for the photographer to achieve! And it' precisely what gives the image its power. So I wound up writing the alt-text thusly ... “A cyclist going rapidly down a city street. The photo is taken from the side, and the cyclist is in the center of the image, heading towards our right. In behind the cyclist we see a bus stop and a brightly lit store. Interestingly, despite the fact that the cyclist is moving quickly, they are unblurred and crisp in the photo - while the background is blurred. The ultimate effect is curious: It's as if the store were moving quickly, while the cyclist was standing still” One could critique this alt-text for being too damn long. Fair enough! And there's something a bit narcissistic about me focusing on the internal experience I have while puzzling over how best to describe this image.

bayport,
@bayport@theatl.social avatar

@clive

Alt text is also a great place to put some Easter eggs. And also a way to get around character limits if needed

Hello I just found your account and web shop. Is there any chance that you could make a hex sign like this for a Mockingbird with stripes on its wings?
I know that their wings have white patches in photos but when they’re flying they look like stripes to me which I think are really cool. I also really like seeing them fend off hawks and large crows. Pretty inspiring

I literally just did this earlier today, best feeling ever!
The knob on my toaster oven broke last year and I just assumed I couldn’t buy a replacement and never even checked. Been using a flathead screwdriver for a year and suddenly today, inspiration struck and I fixed it in a few minutes with a cheapo wall hanger hook and some SteelStik epoxy FTW! 👩🏼‍🏭
