Mini #CrowUpdate : I got to spend some time with the family tonight after work (the first time in a few days). Everybody seems to be doing fine. Junior can more or less fly now. But it's still scared/intrigued by me and by the fact that Mom and Dad are cool with me.
Impossible to take a picture of the three of them, so it's only Mom and Junior and not even on the same shot.

I'm sure the drosophila people will beat this, but the funniest story I'm aware of about gene names is for FMR1 (gene underlying Fragile-X syndrome). The discoverers put a 1 at the end because they assumed they would go on to find more... but there wasn't any 😅

Here is a really interesting documentary about ants... including information about "cardboard ants" who build paper nests rather like wasps.

I've read about these ants but seen very little of images or videos.

It's in French, but will show English subtitles if you get the settings right.

Today is Tuesday, which means I spent a good chunk of the day at home, which means... #CrowUpdate and a very special one, entirely focused on Baby Crow!!!

I saw it not once, not twice, but three times today!

First, while giving peanuts to Mom, I heard him in the tree nearby. It stayed this way for a little while. I'm not sure if it wanted to jump to the branch close by or if it was looking at Mom collecting the peanuts. Maybe both?

A bit later, Dad was walking on the ground, but acting a little weird. I wondered why, so I went and... lo and behold, baby was on the ground too!!! One of its first times.

It was so cute, grabbing a bunch of things with its beak (leaves, rocks, etc.) basically discovering the world.

I find it a bit skinny. (maybe that's why the parents have been coming to see me for peanuts a lot these days?)

(sorry for the picture quality, I didn't want to get too close)

Wall Street destroyed our pension systems and replaced them with substandard products that made them money but left millions of Americans unprepared for retirement.

And like all the other harms that Wall Street inflicts, it will face no consequences for screwing over the rest of us.

Trump has said FOUR times that he will withhold federal funding from schools that require vaccines. Not just COVID. ALL.

This is most schools. This is hitting me where I work. This will lead to children dead from measles. It's obvious, inevitable.

Someone on here said they just couldn't bear to vote for Biden to keep Trump from office since at least under Trump there were better masking rules.

I hope that person sees this.

Worse is worse.

edit: because I don't know measles from smallpox

@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

We learned this the hard way: if you don't have anything tied to not getting vaccinated enough people will opt out out of vague notions about medical distrust, or just the inconvenience of getting it done, that you will have outbreaks.

Nearly all schools from Harvard to little community colleges simply won't let you teach or attend if you don't have the shots. It works.

When you have private schools without these rules ... that's where we've seen outbreaks. This is so simple. Come on.

that elephants purr!

"Stand near an elephant herd, and you may feel a strange vibration in your chest. That’s not your heart beating in terror because you’re, well, standing next to an elephant herd. Or at least that’s not all it is. It’s also a sign that the elephants are talking to one another. Elephants are famous for their trumpeting, of course, but they also produce rumbles pitched so low that humans can’t hear them, only feel them as a sort of physical buzzing. Exactly how elephants do this has been a mystery — and while solving that mystery is not of first-order importance in understanding and preserving this largest of land animals, it would add new insight into how a whole range of species vocalize."

“Students brave enough to risk their financial aid and scholarships are derided as childish rather than principled. And though they are educated to participate in civic life, as soon as these students exercise their First Amendment rights, they are told that protecting private property is a more pressing public concern. It’s as though some older adults simply can’t wrap their heads around the idea that college students, who are old enough to marry, have families and risk their lives for their country, are capable of having well thought-out principles.”

Picture one: Who's this?
Picture two: Oh... Hello there...

Baby is out of the nest, finally.
However, while the picture is dark, its beak and eye are darker than if it had just come out, so I suspect it's been in and out of the nest for a few days probably (although, it's surprising I didn't notice it) or it just stayed in the nest longer than usual (maybe)

Mini #CrowUpdate. The crazy winds of yesterday broke branches, destroyed the last remains of an old nest, and probably delayed baby crow making its first steps into a larger world, but no damage was done to #crow family or their nest. I saw Mom and Dad briefly this morning, but this evening returning home, they were both standing on guard at each end of the park and baby was hanging out in the nest, quite visible now.

Enjoy (there are three pics here and one video next)

Interesting read on "Finding my leadership style" by Helen Walden. A personal reflection on being a PI, a Head of School with a side order of doing so as a woman.

Sorry, it's paywalled (and I have to say very difficult to access even with a subscription) but I enjoyed reading it.
