New blog post:

“Untangling the hairball using statistical inference”

https://skewed.de/tiago/posts/hairball/

TL;DR — Network visualization is often done in the wrong way: first a network layout is produced using a heuristic, and then follow-up analyses are performed and evaluated according to the layout. This is an inversion of priorities that subjugates algorithmic analyses to unreliable and often misleading visualization heuristics. Here we show how this inversion can be fixed: by performing the more meaningful algorithmic analysis first—like clustering or ordering—and then subjugating the visualization heuristics to it.

New development policy: code generated by a large language model or similar technology (e.g. ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot) is presumed to be tainted (i.e. of unclear copyright, not fitting NetBSD's licensing goals) and cannot be committed to NetBSD.

Stack Overflow joins Twitter and Reddit in demonstrating control-freak contempt for the people who made the platform what it is.

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

The company will probably get away with it, because people seem unable to fight back in effective ways, at least in numbers that make a difference.

I find it weird that newspapers characterize students as being “pro-Palestinian” as opposed to anti whatever you call this.

I really did have the best PhD advisor. @ethanz just sued Meta today

“On May 1, 2024, the @knightcolumbia filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ethan Zuckerman—a professor of public policy, communication, and information at the University of Massachusetts Amherst—asking the court to recognize that Section 230 protects the development of tools that empower social media users to control what they see online”

This afternoon, Columbia University brought in New York police arrest over a hundred students who were occupying the campus in solidarity with Palestinians. In response, a much bigger wave of student demonstrators has occupied the university. Tonight, the occupation continues, stronger than ever.

Students—you can do this, too, wherever you are.

The governments of the United States and Israel are not going to stop the genocide in Gaza unless we compel them to.

I think that testable code is reusable code. When you test a function, you run the code in another context than it was built for (the production code). If your code is not reusable you will feel that pain in your tests.

This blog post gives an example of how getting side effects out of functions make them both easier to test and reuse.
