✨ NEW RELEASE! ✨

FORGOTTEN PALACES is a trilogy of ttrpgs (well, two ttrpgs and one dtrpg) about digital worlds out of time: role-playing games inspired by making games as a kid, by early mmos, by lost aesthetics like utopian scholastic and frutiger aero.

in this thread, i'll introduce the three games.

americans won't buy small cars because they don't feel masculine enough, and they love masculine cars. in this essay i am defending that the increased prevalence of femboys in the american media landscape is a plot by car companies and ecological activists to get americans to finally buy smaller cars

OK, the big experiment has begun. A ham radio group has funded the scanning of 4,000 manuals from the Great Manuals Plus Haul. Now, the experiment is - will people kick on a special link in the blog entry to help fund the other 20 PALLETS of manuals?

What would you consider as the most recognizable bitmap fonts in tech history?

I’m imagining stuff like:

  • the arcade/Atari font
  • Chicago (Mac, then iPod)
  • VCR/video equipment fonts
  • Minecraft font
  • IBM PC fonts (MDA, VGA, stuff like that)
  • perhaps System font from Windows 3.x
  • Commodore 64, just because of the sheer popularity of the machine

What am I missing?

The time has arrived: Escape From Evil Island is now available as pay-what-you-want (for Windows, MacOS, or Linux) on itch.io!

If you're feeling a hankering for some old-school DOS-style platforming action, Evil Island should fit the bill nicely. I hope you enjoy!

Today, we filed our final brief in Hachette v. Internet Archive, the publishers’ lawsuit against our library. For four years we've been fighting for library rights—what our founder, @brewsterkahle, calls “a battle for the soul of libraries in the digital age.” https://blog.archive.org/2024/04/19/internet-archive-stands-firm-on-library-digital-rights-in-final-brief-of-hachette-v-internet-archive-lawsuit/

Some landscape renders made with Bryce 3D come by on Mastodon this week and it reminded me of the first landscape renderer I used: VistaPro.

It was was one of many programs on the "Virtual Reality Madness" compilation disc from 1993. VistaPro also came out on Amiga and Mac OS, and later Windows.

VistaPro (v1.01) didn't give you much control but the results looked stunning then, if you allowed your computer to render the highest quality image for a few hours that is.

Lowest quality render. Useful for positioning the camera and checking the lighting.
Higher quality render: more polygons and enabled (oak) trees. Trees can easily block the camera.
Highest quality render at 1024x768 with maximum polygons, Gouraud shading and texture blending.

StrataVision was the 3D modeling and rendering package used to produce graphics of the original Myst. They are so proud of this that even right now if you get the latest version of it ("Strata Design 3D SE", free on Steam,) it comes with a bunch of Myst assets in its library:

I'm still broke, though I've got a temp job for now: they've not yet paid me, however, and I've had to pay something like 4k$ for two medications, and another 2k$ that was supposedly going to make the 4k$ free.

So any donations would be great. https://ko-fi.com/fooneturing

This @kicad -> @blender plugin by @bobbe is absolutely amazing!

It allows you to import your KiCad design into Blender with textures, shaders, and even solder blobs in like 5 clicks!

Now if only I had the slightest idea how to use Blender 😭

I got recognized at the electronics fair, but the funniest part is that they didn't fully recognize me at first.

Then I mentioned I was planning to do Terrible Things to a keyboard I bought, and THAT'S WHEN they recognized me.

Apparently my reputation precedes me.
