@SFRuminations I may have read Synthajoy, but I don't think I've read any others. I recall that I wasn't as impressed with the other Compton I read.

In middle school gave up my allowance for a membership in the Science Fiction Book Club, a new current book every month. It was a deal...

To compare, the NRCC raised just $12 million.

Had brunch with a scientist friend who's an expert in one of the more exciting emerging areas of applied biology. She said:

"People are like why are you so tired. People don't understand that our brains are on FIRE for at least eight hours a day. This is biology's heyday and yet the worst time to be a scientist because we're expected to know a million new things a day and discarded if we don't. All the tools none of the humanity."

I felt the software developers I work with can relate

If your significant other has worn the same pair of glasses for a year. How long would it take you to notice a new pair?

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@Saltssaltgirl I would notice them instantly. No, you can't ask her.

I went all winter without shaving and developed quite a beard. Early in spring I shaved it off. Several days later she asked "did you do something with your hair???"

jhavok,

@Saltssaltgirl I'm lucky, my wife will usually talk about getting a haircut for a few days before she gets one, so it doesnt sneak up on me.

Weekend reading: I wrote about the disingenuous and dangerous folly of anti-anti-Trump conservatism.

How “respectable” conservatives normalize Trump, rage against a caricature of “the Left,” and accommodate rightwing extremism.

    One of the key facts here keeps getting sidestepped by a mixture of scam marketing and common language usage out there.

    LLMs don't sometimes make shit up, they always make shit up.

    That's what an LLM is: a piece of software that makes up plausible sounding shit.

    What's impressive about this is the extent of improvement in the plausibility.

    What's horrifying about it is the extent to which so many people don't care to distinguish between plausibility and correctness.

    jhavok,
    @jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon @GeePawHill I'm skeptical that an LLM can find meaning.

    jhavok,
    @jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon @GeePawHill boolean keyword search. An LLM is irrelevant to that task.

    jhavok,
    @jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon @GeePawHill Boolean keyword search. Did you ever write a research paper? How did you find the information you needed from Medline or Ebsco?

    jhavok,
    @jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

    @simon @GeePawHill Will your LLM-enabled search deliver the citation, or will it tell you a date? If I was doing a boolean for that, I'd start looking for date formated strings on pages with the suspect's name.
