We are thinking of potentially moving development from Discord to another platform (Discord would remain as a community platform).

Do you have any recommendations for platforms and reasons why?

Examples of potential options are Discourse and Mattermost

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@veloren Sounds like you are looking for something not necessarily for chat? I think https://www.loomio.com/ is great and it can integrate via webhooks with Discord and some chat platforms as well. I have an instance running for FOSS projects if you are interested, otherwise I would be happy to give some suggestions on how to self-host it.

Just had a nice chat with one of the developers of https://activist.org/
Sounds like an interesting new software for organising groups and events. They are also looking into making it federated via

@liaizon most likely 😊

@esm I saw your instance is also providing accounts. We recently collected some nice ways to integrate that properly here: https://joinjabber.org/tutorials/integration/mastodon/ @joinjabber

Started working on account integration between Lemmy and Ejabberd: https://f-hub.org/Solarpunk/ejabberd-auth-lemmy

Needs some proper testing, but it looks not bad so far.

Debating moving my book lists again. I'm currently on a random @bookwyrm instance, and I like it okay but like all of them I've tried it's rather slow. Does anyone have a good one that doesn't just drag loading every page? Or is there something else? OpenLibrary seems okay, though I don't like its centralization (but it's run by an organization that I like and trust, so maybe that's fine). Either way I don't like the lack of cooperative governance, but I know I likely won't find that. Recs?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@sam @bookwyrm did you try applying at https://books.solarpunk.moe/ ?

But is also a good idea as there are really not enough instances yet.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@sam it loads quickly here, but I don't have an account there either. Are you sure it isn't just an issue of servers being mostly in Europe?

Our Lemmy server on https://slrpnk.net is having hardware issues that will take some time to fix. Please be patient with us.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

SLRPNK is back for now on the old server. Looks like I need to revise that SATA controller setup again as it corrupted the main boot SSD. Luckily caught it early and locked the filesystem, so I still had remote access and was able to migrate everything somewhat gracefully.

pavot, to Matrix

I'm really surprised there isn't at least one client that's compatible on all (most) platforms, like how has .

I think attempts to bridge this gap, but uses different client sources for different platforms, so it lacks unity between clients.

Does anybody have some insider news as to whether or not something like this is in the works? Perhaps a shiny new client?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@pavot besides Movim https://join.movim.eu there is also a soon to be release new multi-plaform client: https://prose.org/

On the same thread of the question about more efficient serialization between fediverse instances, I think we need: options for low CPU (de)serialization, lower bandwidth protocols, markup that takes less CPU to render.

For networking, I keep thinking of the “polite” wireless networks in Cory Doctorow’s Walkaway that jumped frequencies to avoid current usage and used a mesh to route.

What is the hashtag for live-within-our-means computing rather than the dystopic collapse computing?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@mathiasx seems to fit the bill.

thomas, to random
@thomas@metalhead.club avatar

Currently metalhead.club is using the DeepL Free API for post translation, which means we can translate up to 500,000 characters per month.

Usually the "payment" period ends on 7th of each month but most of the time we run out of free characters shortly before the "reset" and the translation service is not available for a few days each month.

We could upgrade to 1,000,000 characters per month, which you'd probably suffice. But that's an additional € 25 on our invoices. What do you think?

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@thomas self-hosting LibreTranslate would be another option.

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@lascapi we run an hybrid chat network that is fully compatible with , and on https://f-hub.org

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@lascapi yes, any IRC channel is automatically available via XMPP and Matrix as well. Private messages also work beween all these, but are somewhat limited to the IRC feature set (sadly neither Appservice-irc nor Biboumi have good IRCv3 support yet). Also keep in mind that while all messages are transport encrypted, there is no e2ee.

ariadne, to Amazon

"South American heading towards ‘tipping point’ likely to cause Amazon dieback - ‘Shocking’ study finds will be unable to sustain itself and transport moisture once ‘regime shift’ occurs - The South American monsoon, which determines the climate of much of the continent, is being pushed towards a “critical destabilisation point”, according to a study that links regional rainfall to Amazon deforestation and global heating.

The authors of the report said they found their results “shocking” and urged policymakers to act with urgency to forestall a tipping point, which could result in up to 30% less rainfall, a dieback of the forest and a dire impact on food production.
...
Human degradation of the Amazon – by land clearance, fire, logging and mining – is pushing that system towards a tipping point, after which drier conditions would be expected to cause an abrupt “regime shift” in the rainforest, which would be unable to sustain itself and transport moisture.

Other biomes in the region would also be affected, along with swathes of agricultural land because the monsoon stretches thousands of miles south from the Amazon to the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) basin. There would also be a climate impact because the Amazon – which would be worst affected – has historically served as an important carbon sink, though another study this week suggests it is now so degraded that it is at best carbon neutral. A dieback of the forest would release enormous amounts of carbon.
...
The researchers on the Amazon-monsoon paper saw several precursors of the tipping point, including falling rainfall in many areas, the steady lengthening of the Amazon dry season, reduced soil moisture and the increasing frequency and intensity of droughts. There have been three statistically one-in-100-year droughts in the space of a single decade.

“It is shocking to see these signs of destabilisation,” said the lead author, Nils Bochow, of the University of Tromsø and the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research. “But we shouldn’t lose hope. We can still act. We need stricter rules regarding the rainforest.”

ailyaut, to free

Hi!
For the past few weeks, I worked on a new project: !
1999 aims to be an XMPP client that is:

  1. and
  2. cross-platform (mobile and desktop)
  3. modern looking, with a uniform look across platforms
  4. user-friendly
  5. secure

The goal is to have an xmpp client that has the same name, ui and features on every platform, which I believe is what xmpp lacks right now.

I am not a programmer so this is only a UI at the moment!

More info: https://1999.robotfumeur.fr/

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@ailyaut That looks very cool and I like the idea for the name and the logo! But yeah, actually making this is another story all together.

There are however two recent projects that have similar goals:
Moxxy https://moxxy.org/ (currently Android only, but it uses Flutter which is cross-platform), and Prose https://prose.org/ (not yet released, but should come later this year).

Anyone know of a app ala that supports multiple chat protocols? Mainly looking for and with E2EE and room/group chat support... other protocols are a bonus.

(Not asking for much am I... :blobnerd: )

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@kln Another idea is to use chat networks that offer native gateways. So instead of having to juggle multiple protocols on client level, the server "simply" speaks all of them. I have been working on such a hybrid network available on and and it works pretty great: https://wiki.f-hub.org/books/chat-network

#Codeberg currently suffers from high load, and we are having a hard time to stay ahead of the scaling issues.

If you mostly test our software or sync your small private projects, consider using https://next.forgejo.org for the time being.

Benefits include:

  • it runs on the same hardware and stack managed by Codeberg
  • you can make use of the latest features
  • better performance
  • dogfooding helps the Forgejo developers (please report problems!)
  • it reduces the load on Codeberg

Read on …

@sam @jeang3nie @Codeberg That's what we have been working on with https://f-hub.org (Forgejo + chat + Loomio and a few other services). Not quite complete yet though and indeed mainly waiting for federation to become available.
