This is not mine, it's from a colleague who posted it to our work Slack. But it's far too good to be left languishing there, so here's my (stolen, but I'm sure they'll understand) contribution to .

Gah, why can't senior managers ever speak plain English?

I work for a large organisation, and apparently the latest policy is to stop hiring temporary contractors and start recruiting permanent staff again.

How was this policy change communicated to us in an email? With this:

A substantial review of our Talent Acquisition operating model, capacity and service levels over this last year has indicated that to truly elevate our recruitment and sourcing service to the level that this organisation needs, we must increase our internal resource proposition.

/r/firefox's new official home is in the Fedi!

From /r/Firefox:

All legacy technical posts will remain available so that searching for help related to the browser is still available, but henceforth and until the reddit admins appropriately reply to our concerns, the only new submissions allowed will be ones that contain the cuddly fuzzy little animals from which the subreddit indirectly received its name:‌

The red panda! Also known as fire foxes. ‌

If you are looking for technical posts, we now have an official community on Kbin. Keep in mind that Lemmy also federates with Kbin. We continue to be around on Matrix as well.

The subreddit & Kbin magazine aren't run by Mozilla but are still a very important forum for the browser.

Do give them a follow on @firefox - you should be able to follow that from most of the Fediverse i.e. Mastodon, Calckey, etc etc etc

Earlier this year I decided I was going to try to grow tomatoes. I only have a small garden, but I managed to find a mini-greenhouse so that I could give the young plants a head start during the sometimes chilly Spring weather in northern England.

I bought lovely peat-free compost for them to live in, and dutifully watered and fed the plants. And during the couple of weeks of warm weather we had in late spring they flourished.

But now for the last month or so I've had lots and lots of very large, very plump, and very very green tomatoes.

I don't know what gods hang out on the Fediverse - only the coolest ones no doubt - but if any of them read this, could you please send just one week of weather that's sunny and warm (not hot, I don't want Med-level hot, just warm) to north west England.

My tomatoes would really appreciate it.

I'm holding a bunch of very well formed, large, and extremely green tomatoes.

Blimey, it's all kicking off in my town!

On a slightly more serious note, it's interesting that even the print edition of the local paper is essentially using a clickbait headline, as you can't find out which main road is involved without buying (or at least opening) the paper.

We have something of an epic international train journey to make today.

TER Intercité from Carcassonne to Bordeaux.

TGV from Bordeaux to Paris.

Eurotunnel to London.

And then Avanti from Euston back home to Warrington.

All in all, about 1,000 miles of travel, and it's all in the hands of the Keeping Trains On Time gods. Wish us luck!

What the hell is going on here? We've already had well over a week of this sort of thing. But this is north west England: it's pretty much compulsory for it to rain at least a couple of times a week.

I've just found out that someone I used to work with very closely passed away on Monday. She was the same age as me and although we haven't worked together for some time we still kept in touch and it was a genuine shock to hear she's gone.

She was never afraid of voicing her opinions and in recent years she became a very vociferous supporter of trans rights after one of her children said they wanted to transition.

RIP Vicky, you were a force of nature and the world is a much poorer place without you in it.

Can you put halloumi on pizza? My other half has decided that tonight is not only pizza night, but halloumi pizza night.

The internet seems woefully lacking in suitable recipes but I've no intention of letting that stop me.

question:

I run a single-user instance which seems to have become very lagged. If I delete everything from the "pull" queue, is that a reasonably safe action to take?

For obvious reasons I may not see your replies for a good 45-50 minutes!

Nobody asked for my take on this but here we go anyway.

I believe that this is classic Musk behaviour: say something outrageous, wait for the fuss to die down, ignore and/or deny the consequences.

In this case I think he's expecting that there will be a huge public outcry from EU citizens begging him not to take their happy place away. He then thinks he can use that as leverage against the EU to force them to back down.

Unfortunately for him, I think he's both over-estimated the enthusiasm for his platform amongst the public and underestimated the EU's willingness to stand firm against threats.

It's the same sort of silly, not-thinking-it-through behaviour on his part that caused him to have to buy Twitter in the first place.

Anyway the reason I came across that fake legal firm profile is because my wandering around the Fediverse has led me to Diaspora, which looks very interesting as a federated Facebook type thing but with far stronger privacy controls.

It's Fediverse but not ActivityPub, so no direct interoperability with Mastodon/Firefish etc, but I'm considering setting up a presence there - about 5 or 6 years after I left FB.

Anyone else use ?

Phone call from unknown number:

"Hi, can I speak to [my name]? I'm calling from the organisers of the Wirral Viking Festival. We're going through the list of ticket holders to refund them".

I did buy tickets for it in 2020, it was cancelled due to Covid, then rescheduled & cancelled a couple of times since. To be honest, I'd forgotten all about it.

"Unfortunately the credit card you had on file has expired, can you give us updated details please?"

pause while I try to work out how to say fuck off I'm not given my card number to a complete stranger on the phone

Me: "I'm not giving my card details to a random stranger on the phone. Is there any way you can verify who you are?"

Him: "Yes you're not the only person to say that, we'll email you shortly from the official account".

It could still be a scam, I'll wait and see.

I had forgotten what the internet used to be like 20 or more years ago.

But it's just occurred to me that a couple of hours ago I asked a bunch of random strangers a fairly random question (about repairing a broken watch) and quickly got back multiple helpful and informative replies.

This is what the net used to be like, back in the days of usenet and email lists and the early web forums. And most people have probably never experienced it at all, their impression of social media being very different from those of us here on the Fediverse.

PS: It's probably very unfair to call you "random strangers". Even in just the 18 months I've been here I've found and chatted with people I'm happy to call friends, even though I've never met them face-to-face.

@losttourist@social.chatty.monster avatar

Hello UK Maker / electronics community. I've annoyingly run out of 22 AWG solid-core wire - I thought I had some additional reels stashed away but can't find them anywhere.

I can order online of course, but with Christmas delivery backlogs it probably won't arrive for ages, and certainly not for this weekend. Unless I pay stupid £££ extra for next day / weekend delivery, which I'd rather not.

Does anywhere know of somewhere in the UK that stocks this sort of stuff that I could just ... y'know, go and buy it. In person like! I've tried the Toolstation and Screwfix catalogues but they don't seem to have any wire of that sort of gauge.

B&Q? Wickes? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I spend five days a week thinking of all the things I'd like to do at the weekend. Now it's the weekend, and I'm just sitting on the sofa with my laptop and can't even decide what to have for breakfast, or when.

Ooh. It looks like the BBC are going to throw their entire Doctor Who archive onto iPlayer. As well as setting up a brand new Doctor Who subsite.

Coming on November 1st: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/2023/doctor-who-archive-on-bbc-iplayer

On the one hand “FFS, idiot kids”.

On the other hand, from the article:

“two young men were seized by police who were guarding the area in anticipation of trouble. Both men were detained outside a McDonald’s, three doors east of JD Sports. One of the young men, wearing a green hoodie, was detained by four officers. The other in a grey tracksuit was held by three officers.”

So 7 police to detain two people presumably arrested “on suspicion of looking a bit suspicious” or something.
