"Not talking about the connection between -caused natural disasters isn’t leading to long-term answers to these tragic challenges. It is hampering our efforts to find solutions. Joe Biden's claim that Hamas’s October 7 attacks were “driven by ancient desire to wipe out the Jewish people" is ahistorical and dangerous. In fact, Jewish history shows that antisemitism is a Western problem.

@AnnaAnthro The article says Munro never embraced the novel. I would argue that she did; her short stories were novels (or perhaps novellas). The completeness and depth of her short stories made them so compelling. The incompleteness and shallowness of so many short stories are a reason I mostly don't like that genre. Munro was the best. RIP .

2023 in #books, inspired by https://shereads.com/traci-thomas-best-books-of-2023/ and I'd love to see other people answer these, too!

Two books I loved, part 1: Honeybees and Distant Thunder by Riku Onda, which is about four entrants in a classical piano competition in Tokyo, and the characters are all interesting and charming but best of all it just has wonderful writing about music -- like the title itself as a description of how a particular player makes a particular piece sound. It's beautiful, and unlike many books with multiple POVs, I loved all the protagonists equally and was never annoyed by a switch at the wrong time. Just beautiful stuff.

@penpencilbrush @claudiac @bookstodon Have to thank you again for recommending Blackwells. Although I am a solid supporter of my local independent bookstore and public library sometimes they just can't get books that aren't published in Canada or in North America. Blackwells delivered Hannah Kent's wonderful #historicalFiction Devotion and Maggie Shipstead's excellent Astonish Me. So grateful to finally have the opportunity to read these marvellous #books. #Reading

Everything in this story is leading somewhere amazing. It's emotional, beautiful, touching, surprising and so incredibly moving. Sniffed, snuffled and out and out cried my way through the last part of this book.

@kcfromaustcrime @bookstodon Finally got hold of this beautifully written multi-levelled love story. Like her other two brilliant novels of , she shows she has done the research and thinking and internalized the stories and feelings of the time and place as well as the relentless control and persecution of the feminine and the 'other'. This 3rd novel is personal for Kent. Highly recommend it.
