I’ve now been using it for about two months and I am here to tell you that it is, in principle, what we should want the internet to be. If you have been remotely interested in Mastodon but had reservations about joining because you thought it would be difficult, confusing, or otherwise annoying, it is not.

Here is how you make a account: You go to this website. You agree to not share or be an asshole. You select a username and password. Then, you have a Mastodon account.

So, Mastodon:

  1. Not difficult to sign up for
  2. Not difficult to use
  3. Has an app like every other social media network
  4. Not owned by world’s richest man
  5. Not owned by a company whose main platform has been credibly accused of facilitating genocide by the United Nations
  6. Not funded by the guy who made the last place, which sold itself to the world’s richest man
  7. Doesn’t have a crypto thing going on
  8. Free and open source
  9. Administered by a crowdfunded nonprofit
  10. Decentralized, portable, and interoperable

I’m writing this because it has been weird to watch some journalists and people who are fully aware of Facebook’s catastrophic history with things like disinformation,

I spent over a decade working as a makeup assistant. My spouse, a musician. Both of us were in strong unions. We are lucky that we still enjoy those benefits after many years in the business. I am very thankful for the union support we receive.

Why do I bring this up?

Folks, (especially you younger folk) unions are so very important. I can’t stress this enough. Get in one, and make it stronger. Now is that time.

In rural Australia in the 1940s, my mother had rocks thrown at her and was branded a 'communist' because her father, a school headmaster, advocated for establishing a public library.

In the Canadian province where I now reside, the Catholic Church controlled libraries -- and thus access to information -- until the 1960s.

We forget how recent the democratisation of knowledge is -- how transformative such institutions were and how hard-won.

We should not part with them easily.

This is a great overview by @davidpierce about the fatally flawed AMP effort from Google. As @zachleat notes, a number of prominent web developers did (quite bravely) speak up against it, even as Google treated it as an inevitability for the internet. https://www.theverge.com/23711172/google-amp-accelerated-mobile-pages-search-publishers-lawsuit

Happy !

I'm still not onto Black history. I'm still on white US history.

Q: Why were Black folk so happy when OJ was acquitted? To be honest, it feels disgusting. Why does it seem like you're happy he got away with murder?

A: Racism. Black folk did not like OJ that much. In fact, many Black people think he did it. Black folk didn't "celebrate OJ." Black folk celebrated the hope that a brutally unjust, evil, and racist system, could be defeated at all.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

It was a referendum on the fairness of Los Angeles policing.

Many Black people's views on OJ:

  • He probably did it
  • Had motive and opportunity
  • It's often the husband
  • OJ is a bad person anyway
  • I don't want a murderer to go free. I want people to see how evil LA policing is.
  • Johnny Cochran exposed what we've been saying all along
  • OJ may have killed 2 innocent people, but cops kill dozens of innocent Black people
  • Cops lie in court. They plant false evidence.
  • I like Johnny Cochran!
mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

Let me repeat something for folks that didn't hear it the first time: Black people did not love OJ.

OJ was basically the Kanye West of the 80s. He even hung out with the Kardashians! He was one of those anti-Black, pro-Reagan, Black Republican type celebrities.

This is not about OJ. At all.

It's entirely possible to show empathy for the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, dislike OJ and suspect his guilt, and be against systemic racism, all at the same time.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

Also, shout out to Laura Hart McKinny, screenwriter, professor, author, and most importantly, good human being. ♥️👍🏿

She watched this racist, murdering cop lie on the stand after probably planting evidence, and said, "Nope. Not on my watch. I have receipts!"

That horrific transcript is from taped interviews that she conducted. If it weren't for her, the truth might not be known.

Warning: Audio of that cop talking during McKinny CNN interview:

If you have any influence at a company or connections with high profile figures, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell them the best way for them to join the Fedi is to set up their own server.

At this point anyone with a large following joining an established instance will crush it & incur additional costs on a community funded server.

The EU, German gov, and MIT have all joined the Fedi this way.

Crosspost from other sites all you want. Post whatever you want. It's your account.

Too much clubhouse gatekeeping.
