One of several projects I have going… awnings for my tiny windows to block the brutal sunshine in the summer! I’ve gathered the fabric, hooks and all, hand-sewing rather than using the machine. My plan is to make 4 total. I assembled TP rolls to create “rods” and mocked up a paper POC. First fabric shade is finished and I’m working on the 2nd. Mounting each to the house with French cleats is next. It’s been a super fun process!

The finished proof of concept made out of white craft paper, mounted on a wooden frame with black hooks. I assembled the frame to get the measurements and hang pattern worked out.
The finished fabric real-deal awning, with a blue and lime green fish pattern on white, with the mock TP-roll rods, mounted on the awning frame. It was super windy that day so the awning is billowing up in the center.
Closeup of a blue and lime green fish pattern on white fabric. A sewing needle and green thread are in the foreground. Colorful fabric clips that look like clothes pins are in the background.

So I'm reading Blood in the machine and actually think being called a Luddite is the highest complement you can give someone today. I encourage everyone to read Blood in the Machine. Luddites weren't technophobes. https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/brian-merchant/blood-in-the-machine/9780316487740/?lens=little-brown @bookstodon

@weirdwriter @bookstodon Great perspective! For the longest I thought I knew the term Luddite from a novel so I looked it up. I’m pleased that wasn’t the case. I came across this article on literary works and the Luddite movement, though. Interesting!

To me, “infinite universes” of fiction like , and etc. feel unsatisfying in the same way that LLMs do. They are systems which churn out new threads of narrative in vaguely the same style but always without any further substance than the original idea. That’s not say there’s not great artistry and craft in the individual efforts of those involved, but the overall system feels vacuous in the same way that asking to continually write space operas would.

@andrewfeeney Great take! It’s feeling just a smidge too far from the OG for me. I miss seeing the helmets in the intro. I love the shows, but I just have to keep watching Ep. I-6 or so and … maybe some Rebels and Resistance for a good, grounded fix.
